This document proposes using RFID technology to enhance casual carpooling by recording actual carpooling behavior. This would allow incentives beyond HOV lane access and address issues like personal safety, free riders, and underfilling vehicles. An RFID device in each vehicle would record the IDs of passengers' RFID devices, creating a record of rides. Incentives could then reward registered carpooling without self-reporting. Safety would increase through recording rides and allowing anonymous feedback on drivers. The system could also vary incentives to encourage filling vehicles to capacity.

Building Massively Parallel Event-Driven Architectures (SRV373-R1) - AWS re:I...Amazon Web Services
Data and events are the lifeblood of any modern application. By using stateless, loosely coupled microservices communicating through events, developers can build massively scalable systems that can process trillions of requests in seconds. In this talk, we cover design patterns for using Amazon SQS, Amazon SNS, AWS Step Functions, AWS Lambda, and Amazon S3 to build data processing and real-time notification systems with unbounded scale and serverless cost characteristics. We also explore how these approaches apply to practical use cases, such as training machine learning models, media processing, and data cleansing.
This document outlines a 5-step process for postal vendors to provide data analysis and savings opportunities. The steps include: 1) providing raw mailing and payment data, 2) researching current postage volumes and fees with vendors, 3) analyzing equipment savings opportunities, overcharges, and lost postage, 4) consolidating equipment inventory and lease information, and 5) providing a savings summary and ongoing visibility through a web platform. The goal is to quantify current and future savings from cost reductions for mailing vendors.

The macro processor detects macro triggers like % and & in the code and handles macro code and variable substitution. It stores macro variables and their values in a symbol table. When it detects a macro variable reference &variable, it looks up the variable name in the symbol table and substitutes the variable value into the code before passing it to the compiler. This allows macros to generate dynamic code with variable data.
This document summarizes an approach for de-duplicating merchant records using Hadoop and Lucene. Key elements include:
1. Fuzzy string matching of merchant names, addresses, and phone numbers is used to identify potential duplicate records. Match scores are calculated based on similarities.
2. Records are partitioned by state and matched against a Lucene index of reference data for that state only, to allow parallel processing.
3. The system was optimized to achieve a 10x speedup, processing 1 million records in 1 hour instead of 10 hours previously. Configuration changes and code optimizations improved performance.
4. Best practices like caching frequently used values, using HBase utilities, and abstracting HBase
The document discusses migrating an existing authentication system at Columbia University to the Central Authentication Service (CAS). Specifically, it addresses:

This document discusses the benefits of green computing and provides tips for creating a more eco-friendly computing system. It begins by explaining how embracing green computing practices can improve energy management, increase energy efficiency, reduce e-waste, and save money. It then provides tips like turning off computers when not in use, using power management settings, purchasing energy efficient electronics, and recycling e-waste. The document encourages adopting these small changes to help the environment while saving on energy costs.
The document discusses the growing problem of electronic waste (e-waste) and its environmental impacts. It notes that e-waste contains valuable but also harmful materials, and that the life span of electronics is decreasing due to advances in technology, leading to more e-waste. The e-waste is polluting due to toxic heavy metals in components and improper disposal practices, especially in developing countries where e-waste is often dumped. Proper e-waste management through reducing waste, reusing electronics, and responsible recycling is needed to limit environmental degradation and health impacts from this waste stream.
The document discusses the 3 immutable laws and best practices of e-waste management: 1) Responsible management requires a comprehensive audit trail, as even inert materials can be hazardous; 2) De-manufacturing should be a last resort, and environmental responsibility extends to final disposition; 3) Highest use is best use, as working units provide greatest benefit if reused. It also outlines the 5 essential e-waste best practices of centralizing, sanitizing, optimizing value, scrutinizing disposition, and analyzing audit trails.
The document discusses the origins and history of green tea. It originated in Southeast Asia and was first used medicinally in China in 2737 BC. It was later used as currency and demand grew as farmers began cultivating it. By the 1850s, England was consuming over 80 million pounds annually. Green tea is grown on plantations in climates with heavy rainfall and elevations between 3,000-7,000 feet. The active compounds in green tea are polyphenols called catechins that may provide health benefits such as cancer prevention and weight loss. Current studies show green tea may help reduce body fat and LDL cholesterol.

The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization set a goal in 1996 to halve the number of hungry people in the world by 2015. There are currently 842 million hungry people globally, with the majority living in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Agriculture is the backbone of the economy for 75% of hungry populations. Providing farmers with access to training, markets, fertilizer, and improved seeds would be more effective and cheaper than sending food aid. While some food aid will still be needed for disasters, wars, and droughts, supporting agriculture can help communities produce their own food to feed themselves and sell surplus.
The document outlines 8 types of waste that should be eliminated: motion, waiting, transportation, overprocessing, overproduction, defects, unused inventory, and unused human capacity. 4. 1 Introduction
This document contains a Reference Guide to the Rates Calculator APIs. See the Developer’s Guide to Web Tools APIs to learn the administrative process
for gaining access to the Web Tools APIs as well as the basic mechanism for calling the APIs and processing the results. The Developer’s Guide also
contains information on testing and trouble-shooting.
Note: The Request Parameter sections present the XML input tags for generating Live requests along with the restrictions on the values allowed. An error
message will be returned if an incorrect value is entered. Also, be aware of the maximum character amounts allowed for some tags. If the user enters more
than those amounts, an error will not be generated. The Web Tool will simply pass in the characters up to the maximum amount allowed and
disregard the rest. This is important since the resulting value could prevent a correct response.
When building the XML request, pay particular attention to the order and case for tags. An error message will be returned if an incorrect value is entered.
Remember that all data and attribute values in this document are for illustration purposes and are to be replaced by your actual values. For instance, a line
of sample code may be:
<ZipDestination>12345</ZipDestination>
In this instance, you will replace “12345” with the destination ZIP Code for the domestic-bound package.
