How is the Book of Revelation Communicated The Temple
What is this? What is “Literal” Translation? What is Allegorical Translation?

The Problem ,[object Object],Does John describe what he saw? What is he equating? Why so localized? Does he have hermeneutical integrity over Ezekiel 40—48? Should we look for a “literal temple?”
To Find the answer . . . ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Luther: Creation and the Garden
Back to the Beginning ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Gen 1:8 ¶ Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground —trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Lucas Cranach der Ältere 1536 ,[object Object],Literal translation: Ge 2:15 And Jehovah God took the man, and caused him to rest in the garden of Eden, to serve it, and to keep it.
Beza: 1519-1605 The Fall of Adam and Eve
The serpent tempts Eve to partake of the forbidden fruit as Adam sits nearby; to the left, gambling, leisure, suicide, murder and perhaps drunkenness are depicted as the consequences of the sin in the garden. The Latin superscription reads, "Three, bringing disaster to souls,"
Thomas Cole (1828) Gen 2: 15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. Tilling and cultivating are garden terms. “ Serving and guarding” are priestly terms.
Walking The same word for God walking in Eden, the very word, that only occurs a few times in the Old Testament is found, in its Hebrew Hiph Form for the walking that God does in the Temple. Genesis 3:8-Lev 26 12: Deut 23:14 2 Sam 7:6-7 14
Did Adam “guard” the temple? What unclean thing did he allow in the temple?
Expulsion from Paradise, Caedmon Manuscript AD 1000 “ Serve, Work, Cultivate,” . . . These are OT words for “Worship.” These are priestly words that “serve and guard” the Temple. And with the Garden being a “Temple” Adam was to “serve” God by “gardening” and “guarding it.”
Ezekiel 28 ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Ezekiel 28
Lorenzo Maitani English: Genesis : Expulsion from Paradise; marble bas-relief by Lorenzo Maitani on the left pier of the façade of the cathedral; Orvieto, Italy When Adam was cast out of the Garden, two Cherubs were stationed to guard the Garden. Genesis 3:24
And the Cherubs become memorialized 1 Kings 623 And within the oracle he made two cherubims of olive tree, each ten cubits high. 24 And five cubits was the one wing of the cherub, and five cubits the other wing of the cherub: from the uttermost part of the one wing unto the uttermost part of the other were ten cubits.

Part 2 Symbolism of Temples Depiction of Solomon’s Temple
A Temple is a Model? Heb 8:5 They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: "See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain."

Israel at Sinai Israel worships on a mountain. Sinai is called “the mountain of God” (Exod 3:1, 18:5, 24:13 Just as with the tabernacle and temple, so Mount Sinai was divided into three sections of increasing sanctity.
The people at the bottom Ex 19:12 Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, ‘Be careful that you do not go up the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death.

Israel’s End-Time Temple ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Model of Ezekiel’s Temple In Ezekiel 36—37 we have the same link: after promising that God would restore Israel and “multiply men,” and make them “increase and be fruitful” 36:10-11, he also promises a “multiplication” of the fruitfulness, so that Israel’s formerly desolated land will become like the garden of Eden’ in which God “will increase their men like a flock (36:35—38).
[object Object],[object Object]
Return to Eden ,[object Object],[object Object]
Notice the development from Leviticus 26 to fulfillment in Ezekiel 37ff: The chamber marked # 27 in the model contains rooms set apart for the Zadokite priests, like Ezekiel, who keep charge of the altar and make sacrifices, according to Ezekiel's hierarchical view of the priesthood
This is an end-time temple (Ezek 47:3) ,[object Object],[object Object]
[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Reconsider Lev 26:11-12 I will also walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people. How would God “Walk” among his people if his tabernacling presence were confined to a physical temple.
[object Object]
Jesus ,[object Object],[object Object]
Israel will finally fulfill Adam’s mandate. “ My dwelling place also will be over them. Ezek 37:27. The New Tabernacle will extend over all of God’s people who have been “multiplied” and “shall live on the land,” that is , living throughout the land of promise. The Nations will “know that I am the LORD.” Jer 3:16 And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit [it]; neither shall [that] be done any more. Jer 3:17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD ; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.

Editor's Notes

  1. It appears that verse 3 is an interpretation. This interprets the vision and describes the symbolism of this chapter. ha It could be that verses 1 and 2 are visions. It can be that verse 2 is an interpretation of verse 1. Chap 22:14: “Blessed are those who . . . . Outside the city . . . “ Is there the lake of fire in the new creation? Can sin really enter into the new heavens and the new earth? These are the same people who are in the lake of fire, in 21:8 You can’t have these people in the new creation, so the temple-city composes the entire new creation and the new earth. How can you have a New Creation that is square and is a garden?
  2. Verse 10 goes with Ezekiel 40 Verse 11 describes the same stones as the foundation of Solomon’s temple Chapter 21:16 : The Arc of the covenant of Solomon’s Temple: “The length, and the width, and the height were equal” and the question is why is John descr bing a temple and not the entire New Heavens and Earth?
  3. 1. The only thing that he describes is a temple city, a city constructed like a temple. And the references are to Ezekiel 40—48. But if we read the chapter carefully, we’ll see that John is equating the temple city with the new heavens and the new earth.
  4. The OT will tell us as we take a survey through the Bible.

  6. The Garden of Eden was the temple of God’s presence in the first Creation. This is a characteristic of the Temple in Israel.
  7. “ To work it and . . . “ The words are interpreted as “serve” and “ guard.” In the ANE there were gardens in the Temples
  8. The Bible, that is, The Holy Scriptures contained in the Old & New Testament Author: Bèze, Théodore de, 1519-1605 Image Title: Fall of Adam and Eve Scripture Reference: Genesis 3 Description: This frontispiece illustrates the present fall and forthcoming redemption of humanity (indicated by the words inscribed upon the banderoles found in each of their hands), as Adam and Eve stand beside the tree of the knowledge of good and evil with the serpent tangled in its branches. The Tetragrammaton (top, center), encircled by a cloud and radiating light, signals the presence of God.
  9. Author: David, Jan, 1545?-1613 Image Title: Original Sin Scripture Reference: Genesis 3 Description: The serpent tempts Eve to partake of the forbidden fruit as Adam sits nearby; to the left, gambling, leisure, suicide, murder and perhaps drunkenness are depicted as the consequences of the sin in the garden. The Latin superscription reads, "Three, bringing disaster to souls," and the text below, "Which wise man thrown headlong by greed brings death [the underworld] to us? Take heed: Example: the leadership and society of evil ones." The banner across the image cites the Vulgate of Proverbs 1:14, "We may share a common purse.” The numeral, 5, has been placed in the upper right to indicate its plate number within a series of illustrations.
  10. This tilling and cultivating are gardening terms. But the terms that are used are temple words. Adam was the first priest in OT history. “ Serving and guarding.” Adam is a priestly messenger, and many temples in the ANE had Gen 3 24. The priests were to guard the Temple Neh 11:9, they were wardens and their role was memorialized later in the second temple. Neh 11:9 9 Joel the son of Zichri was their overseer; and Judah the son of Hassenuah was second over the city.
  11. The same word for God walking in Eden, the very word, that only occurs a few times in the Old Testament is found, in its Hebrew Hiph Form for the walking that God does in the Temple. Genesis 3:8-Lev 26 12: Deut 23:14 2 Sam 7:6-7 14
  12. Detail shot of Adam and Eve in the garden; one small section of S.P. Dinsmoor's iconic, infamous, and just plain strange collection of concrete sculptures in Lucas, Kansas - The Grassroots Art Capital of Kansas. When does Adam become “naked.” Adam loses his priestly robe when he fails to guard the temple. What unclean thing did Adam allow into the temple.
  13. English: Genesis : Expulsion from Paradise; marble bas-relief by Lorenzo Maitani on the left pier of the façade of the cathedral; Orvieto, Italy When Adam was cast out of the Garden, two Cherubs were stationed to guard the Garden. Genesis 3:24
  14. And the Cherubs become memorialized in the Tabernacle and the Temple. This shows that there is a real continuity between the Garden in Eden and the Temple.

  16. Then, there is a tree of life in the middle of the Garden. How does this compare to a temple. The Lampstand. The Lampstand at the entrance to the Holy of Holies, in the Holy place and outside of the Holy of Holies The Lampstand looked like a little tree. It had a trunk and 3 branches coming out of each side.
  17. First Kings Chapter 16. Ceder carved in boards, and carvings . . . There is a Garden Atmosphere.
  18. Not only was Adam to guard the Temple, but he was to subdue the earth. Genesis 1:28 the “Great Commission.” As he was to rule over the earth, he was to increase the boundaries of the Edenic Temple. The Temple was to encompass the whole earth. So Eden was a temple Adam was a priest Cherebs were there There was a tree Adam was a priest.
  19. Depiction of Solomon’s Temple
  20. n physics and fiction , a wormhole is a hypothetical topological feature of spacetime that would be, fundamentally, a "shortcut" through spacetime . For a simple visual explanation of a wormhole, consider spacetime visualized as a two-dimensional (2-D) surface (see illustration, right). If this surface is "folded" along a (non-existent) third dimension, it allows one to picture a wormhole "bridge". (Please note, though, that this image is merely a visualization displayed to convey an essentially unvisualisable structure existing in 4 or more dimensions.
  21. The rationale for the worldwide encompassing nature of the paridisal temple in Revelation 21 lies in the ancient notion that the Old Testament temple was a microcosm of the entire heaven and earth. One of the most explicit texts affirming this is Psalm 78:69. The psalmist is saying that in some way, God designed Israel’s earthly temple to be comparable to the heavens and to the earth. Similarly, the earlier “pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furniture’ was made ‘after the heavenly pattern which was shone on the mountain..
  22. Israel’s Temple was composed of three main parts, each of which symbolized a major part of the cosmos: 1) the outer court represented the habitable world where humanity dwelt: 2) the holy place was emblematic of the visible heavens and its light sources; 3) the holy of holies symbolized the invisible dimension of the cosmos where God and his heavenly hosts dwelt.
  23. The outer court was associated with the visible earth. Recall that all Israelites, representing humanity at large, could enter there and worship.
  24. Isaiah 6: Heaven is my throne, the earth is my footstool.
  25. As we see, after Adam’s failure to fulfil God’s mandate, God raises up other Adam-like figures to whom his commission is passed on. We find that some changes in the commission occur as a result of sin entering the world. Adam’s descendants, like him, however, will fail. Failure will continue until there arises a “Last Adam” who will finally fulfil the commission on behalf of humanity.
  26. In face, the same commission given to the patrarchs is restated numerous times in subsequent OT books both to Israel and the true eschatological people of God. Like Adam, Noah, and his children also failed to perform this commission. God then gave the essence of the commission of Genesis 1:28 to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Israel.
  27. The combination of all these five elements occurs elsewhere in the Old Testament only in describing Israel’s tabernacle or temple.
  28. This symbolically represented the notion that their progeny were to spread out to subdue the earth from a divine sanctuary in fulfillment of the commission in Genesis 1:26—30. It is possible that building an altar at Beer-sheba, the southernmost border of the promised land, may have represented not only a claim to the land but also a legimitation of the sanctuary for later Israel. It was like a dotting of the land with shrines.
  29. Ancient Babylon attempted to link earth to heaven through self-glorifying pride (Genesis 11:1—9)
  30. The Tower of Babel defied the mandate of the living God. God commanded that man should occupy the earth  and have dominion over it (Genesis 1:26-28). However, some of Noah’s descendants decided they didn’t like the idea that they should spread out over all the earth at God’s command.  Rather, they wanted to make a name for themselves, thus rejecting the Name of their Creator. Their thinking was that if they banded together and built a city with a tower that would reach to the heavens, they could avoid being dispersed and build a center of power for themselves. (See Genesis 11:1-9.) So the reason for building the city and its great tower was to defy God. Put another way, these folks were saying, if we don’t build this tower, we will be forced to obey God. PDF Version Book Title: Historiæ Biblicæ Veteris et Novi Testamenti : junioribus ad faciliorem eruditionem, senioribus ad vivaciorem memoriam, divini verbi præconibus ad celeriorem reminiscentiam, omnibus ad utilem sanctámque in curiositatem in centum frugiferis foliis exhibitæ / à Josepho & Joanne Klauber Author: Klauber, Joseph Sebastian, ca. 1700-1768 Image Title: Tower of Babel Scripture Reference: Genesis 11 Description: This image depicts the construction of the tower of Babel. In the upper right-hand corner God, with a radiant triangle symbolic of the Trinity, comes down to earth to investigate the construction of the tower. At the top of the image a dove, ostensibly the Holy Spirit, sends down various tongues to confuse the language of humanity. In the lower right-hand corner, the workers cease construction and depart because of their inability to communicate.
  32. But when Adam was cast out, he lost his function as a priest. Finally, as the world becomes more wicked, God says, “I’m going to destroy the earth.” So,, God brings about the conditions of the first creation again. Genesis 1:2 compare to Genesis 8:1 and there, God caused the “wind,” same name for “Spirit” to pass over the earth and the water. And the waters were separated from the Land as they subsided.
  33. And, the creation process ended in “Rest,” In Genesis 8:4 we read that the arc rested on Mt. Ararat and Noah’s sacrifice was a “fragrance of rest,” Likewise, God starts building another Temple. The Temple was Noah’s Arc, an “Arc” Noah’s arc had three levels or sections, and it was square. God gives detailed architectural plans to Noah. The only other places in the OT where such detailed plans are given are . . .
  34. That “Noah built an altar to the Lord’ Gen 8:20, also in direct connection with God’s reapplication of the Adamic commission (Gen 9:1, 7, cf 8:17) indicates that this also may have been an even earlier inchoate temple-building event. The following observations enhance this suggestion. First he “offered burnt offerings on the altar.
  35. The Tabernacle in the Wilderness, and . . .
  36. Working Replica of Noah's Ark opened In SCHAGEN, Netherlands .      Man Builds Noah's Ark to the exact scale given in the Bible.    The massive central door in the side of Noah's Ark was opened and  the first crowd of curious townsfolk beheld the wonder. This replica of the biblical Ark was built by Dutch Creationist Johan Huibers as a testament to his faith in the literal truth of the Bible.   The ark is 150 cubits long, 30 cubits high and 20 cubits wide. That's two-thirds the length of a football field and as high as a three-story house.
  37. Israel’s encounter with God at Mount Sinai also appears to be another experience of worship at a sacred location that approzimates a temple.
  38. Not only does the top part of Sinai approximate the holy of holies because only Israel’s “High Priest,” Moses, could enter there, but it was the place where God’s theophanic “cloud” and presence dwelt.
  39. The only other times in the OT where God’s presence is spoken of as a “cloud dwelling” is respect to God’s presence above the tabernacle exod 40:35
  40. Just as an altar was in the outermost section of the temple, so an altar was built at the lowest and least sacred part of Sinai, where Israel “offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bullks as peace offerings to the Lord. The majority of this language is temple language.
  41. Earlier in Exodus, God’s presence at Sinai was depicted as a “cassia tree” or “bush” burning with fire, yet the cassia tree a was not consumed (Exod 3:2). In the light of the parallels already adduced, this “unconsumed burning tree” may be the proleptic equivalent to the lampstand-like tree in the holy place on Mount Zion whose lamps burned continually. Correspondingly the ground around the burning tree is calles “the place” of “holy ground” Exod 3:5.
  42. In face, the same commission given to the patriarchs is restated numerous times in subsequent OT books both to Israel and the true eschatological people of God. Like Adam, Noah, and his children also failed to perform this commission. God then gave the essence of the commission of Genesis 1:28 to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Israel.
  43. In this light, Sinai was an appropriate place for God to show to Moses “the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furniture” in order that they would construct it exactly as it was “shown” to Moses. Hence, once Israel leaves the stationary sanctuary of Sinai, the commission is passed on to them to build the mobile tabernacle in order that God’s glorious presence would continue to “dwell among them” during their wilderness.
  44. It implies that the presence of the Lord which gave the essential meaning to the temple continued with the faithful remnant in exile to form a veritable invisible temple for them until they could return and begin building the second temple.
  45. Israel’s prophesied eschatological temple has the same associations as most of the preceding temple constructions. In Leviticus 26:6—12 allusion is made to Genesis 1:28 in direct connection to the erection of the tabernacle in Israel’s midst: if Israel is faithful, they will defeat their enemies in the land, and “I will trun toward you and make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will confirm My covenant with you . . I will also walk among you and be your God and you will be my people.
  46. Ezekiel’s Temple, the futuristic temple. In Ezekiel 36—37 we have the same link: after promising that God would restore Israel and “multiply men,” and make them “increase and be fruitful” 36:10-11, he also promises a “multiplication” of the fruitfulness, so that Israel’s formerly desolated land will become like the garden of Eden’ in which God “will increase their men like a flock (36:35—38).
  47. Here's a detail-image of the model of Ezekiel's ideal temple (Ezekiel 40 -48). It shows the second set of huge gate-complexes guarding the inner court of the temple precincts. You can also see the sanctuary building proper in the center of the image, and the altar of burnt offering (# 28; Ezekiel 43:13-27) in front of it. The miraculous river flowing from the temple to give life to the land (Ezek 47:1) is indicated by # 29. The chamber marked # 27 in the model contains rooms set apart for the Zadokite priests, like Ezekiel, who keep charge of the altar and make sacrifices, according to Ezekiel's hierarchical view of the priesthood. Opposite it, but hidden behind the inner east gate from this angle, is a similar chamber for another set of priests who keep charge of the temple but do not have altar privileges.
  48. 2D showing the high gates over the wall. Strikingly, there is also an association of an eschatological Eden with an end-time temple in chapters 40-48. and which is also depicted with imagery from Eden 47:3. While Leviticus 26 and Ezekiel 37 could be just prophesying God’s tabernacling presence in a temple structure, it is just as possible, if not preferable, to understand them as foretelling a time when the temple will be, not a physical handmade house, but God’s manifest presence alone that will fill Israel and the earth as never before.
  49.   "The area of the temple courts (500 x 500 "reeds," or about one square mile) would be larger than the entire ancient walled city of Jerusalem, and the holy portion for priests and Levites (20,000 x 25,000 reeds, or about 40 x 50 miles) would cover an area six times the size of greater London today and could not possibly be placed within present-day Palestine, that is between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea (Ezek. 47:18), to say nothing of the "portion of the prince" on either side of this area (45:7, 47:21). The Millennial Jerusalem would be about 40 miles in circumference and thus ten times the circumference of the ancient city.
