This document rejects the "Three Temeculas" model of Temecula's history popularized in the 1950s-60s. It argues Temecula's history should be divided into two periods: the Aboriginal Period from 8000 BC to 1821, during which sparse Luiseño tribes occupied the area; and the Luiseño Period from 1821-1848, when the land came under Spanish control through missions. While the Spanish had little impact on the Luiseño culture, they established ranchos that defined early land boundaries. The document concludes the Luiseño tribes had little influence on the modern city of Temecula.
