TELEMAC is hydrodynamic modeling software that can:
1. Solve the shallow water equations using finite element or finite volume methods on an unstructured triangular grid.
2. Perform simulations of free surface flows, accounting for effects like turbulence, temperature/salinity gradients, and dry areas.
3. Include pre- and post-processing tools for generating grids, visualizing results, and exchanging data with GIS software.
This software evaluates any roadway given a profile, a PGL tie, and a constant or variable typical section. The edge of pavement profile can be plotted to analyze low points or flat grades. Additionally, elevations for any point within a given profile, and typical section can be calculated. This software is mainly a tool to analyze vertical geometries.

Review and Assessment of Turbulence Transition ModelsIJERDJOURNAL
Â
ABSTRACT: Turbulent boundary layer transition can greatly affect flow characteristics such as skin friction, heat transfer, pressure loads, and boundary layer separation point. Accurate computation of such effect is vital to the design of components and vehicles subjected to turbulent transition flows. In this paper we report our review of the existing boundary layer transition models, selection of the boundary layer transition models most appropriate for the existing Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes flow solvers, and implementation and evaluation of the selected transition models with some benchmark test cases, ranging from subsonic to hypersonic flows. The objective of this assessment study is not intended to pick the best transition model (in fact, there is no transition model accurately predict the boundary layer transition for all cases tested here). Rather it is to demonstrate that (1) the flow physics of turbulence transition is very complicated and not yet well understood, (2) the applicability of empirical transition models is limited and their use should be cautious due to different transition characteristics for different flow regimes/environments, and (3) further research on prediction of turbulence transition is warranted to improve the accuracy, efficiency and range of applicability.

In this research, we developed numerically a Prototype Auditory Membrane (PAM) for a fully implantable and self contained artificial cochlea. Cochleae are one of the important organs for hearing in the human and animals. Material of the prototype and implant of PAM are made of Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)- Kureha, Japan which is fabricated using MEMS and thin film technologies. Another important thing in the characteristic of the PAM is not only convert the acoustic wave into electric signal but also the frequency selectivity. The thickness, Young’s modulus and density of the PAM are 40 μm, 4 GPa, and 1.79  103 kg/m3, respectively. The shape and dimension of the PAM is trapezoidal with the width is linearly changed from 2.0 to 4.0 mm with the length are 30 mm. Numerically, we develop the model of PAM is based on commercial CFD software, Fluent 6.3.26 and Gambit 2.4.6. The geometry model of the PAM consists of one-sided blocks of quadrilateral elements for 2D model and tetrahedral elements for 3 D model respectively. In this study we set the flow as laminar and carried out using unsteady time dependent calculation. The results show that the frequency selectivity of the membrane is detected on the membrane surface.

4.  The various simulation modules of the TELEMAC
system use powerful algorithms based on the finite
element or finite-volume methods.
 Space is discretised into an unstructured 2D grid of
triangular elements, so that the calculation grid can be
refined locally in areas of interest.
 The pre- and post-processing tools are particularly
powerful and user-friendly. Most of them are based on
the use of Ilog/Views libraries and offer a range of
extremely sophisticated functions. The grid can be
generated with the generator embedded in the
TELEMAC-MASCARET system (MATISSE module,
now deprecated) or by others (Blue-Kenue, Janet).
5. Purpose
 TELEMAC is a software system designed to study
environmental processes in free surface transient flows.
It is therefore applicable to seas and coastal domains,
estuaries, rivers and lakes. Its main fields of application
are in hydrodynamics, water quality, sedimentology and
water waves.
 All computational models of the TELEMAC system are
based on a common library of finite element numerical
solvers.
6.
7. DEVELOPERS
 TELEMAC-2D was developed by the National
Hydraulics and Environment Laboratory of the Research
and Development Directorate of the French Electricity
Board (EDF-DRD), in collaboration with other research
institutes.
8. OPEN SOURCE/FREE
SOFTWARE
 All the modules of the TELEMAC system have
been open source since July 2010 and can be
downloaded on the internet site
(www.telemacsystem.com)
 Difficulties related to installation, bugs as well as
suggestions for future development are
welcome and need to be submitted through the
forum to the development team.
9. Main Applications
The main applications of the TELEMAC system software are the
following:
 Dam bursts,
 Flood studies
 Harbour installation studies (structures, jetties, breakwaters)
 Impact of hydraulic
 Estuary management and development
 Thermal recirculation
 Dumping of dredged materials
 Hydro sedimentary studies
 Wave disturbance in a port or bay
 River restoration studies
 Hydraulic studies for tourist development schemes
 Study of marine climates (generation by the wind and wave
propagation).
10. THEORICAL ASPECTS
TELEMAC-2D software solve the next four hydrodynamic equations:
- continuity :- dynamic on x :
-dynamic on y :
- markers conservation :
 on these equations, h [m] is the water level,
 u,v [m/s] the speed components,T [g/l or °] the passive marker,
 g [m²/s] the gravity,
 [m²/s] the speed diffusivity coefficients of the marker,
 Z [m] the freesurface level,
 t [s] the time
 x,y [m] the spacial coordinates.
 h,u,v and T are the unknowns. The turbulence equations are the traditionnal
k-epsilon equations.
11. PRE-PROCESSING : grid
generation
The MATISSE software is used to :
- build the geometry,
- generate the mesh,
- specify the type of boundary conditions
required.
13. IN AND OUT FOLDERS
 For a computation, TELEMAC-2D software needs
different folders before running the computation
and delivers others at the end the calculation.
Some of these folders are optional ones
- IN-FOLDERS:
 Parameter folder
 Mesh folder
 Boundary conditions folder
 Fortran folder
-OUT-FOLDERS:
 Result folder
14. IN-FOLDERS
Parameter folder:
 It is a text folder
 This folder is the interface between the user and the
software:
 The user decide which paramaters would be used for
the computation.
 The key-word have to be written in CAPITAL and their
respective value separate by an equality sign = or :
 The characters situated behind a "/" are not take
account for the calculation.
 The command & FIN shows the end of the folder.
15. Mesh folder
 This folder is created by MATISSE
 Can be generated by another grid editor
 Contains the mesh information
 The number of element
 The number of neighbors per element
 The matrix X and Y of the points coordinates
 Also be named as geometric folder
 Could be open with Rubens software.
16. Boundary conditions folder:
 This folder is genarated by MATISSE
 Can be modified with a text editor.
 Each line represent a boundary point.
Fortran folder:
 This folder contains all the subroutines modified by
the user.
 It must contain the princi.f program which permit to
determine the language used during the computation
interface.
 It also permit to fix the size of the computation matrix.
17. Out Folders
Result folder:
 Written in SELAFIN (binary mode, so it could
not be read by a text editor), are stocked the
computation results for step time.
 Its contents could change in function of the
value of the next key-word
18. TELEMAC-2D
 It 2D hydrodynamics module, TELEMAC-2D, solves the
so-called shallow water equations, also known as the
Saint Venant equations.
 It solves equations using finite-element or finite-
volume method and a computation mesh of triangular
elements.
 It can perform simulations in transient and permanent
conditions.
 Applications are similar as explained earlier
19. TELEMAC-3D
Uses the same horizontally unstructured mesh as TELEMAC-2D
but solves the Navier-Stokes equations
The wave formulation for the updating of the free surface is
used for efficiency.
The 3D mesh is developed as a series of meshed surfaces
between the bed and the free surface surface.
Flexibility in the placement of these planes permits the use of a
sigma grid (each plane at a given proportion of the spacing
between bed and surface) or a number of other strategies for
intermediate surface location.
In the presence of a near surface thermocline or halocline this is
advantageous in so far as mixing water between the near
surface planes, where the greatest density gradients are
located, can be avoided. When drying occurs the water depth
falls to zero exactly and the planes collapse to a zero inter-
layer spacing.
20. TELEMAC-3D - 3D
Hydrodynamics
 TELEMAC-3D is a three-dimensional (3D) model
that uses the same horizontally unstructured
mesh as TELEMAC-2D.
 The wave formulation for the updating of the free
surface is used for efficiency.
 The model mesh is developed as a series of
model planes between the bed and the surface
planes.
 The model was written primarily to solve the
shallow water equations in 3D format but an
option is also available to solve the governing
equations in a shallow water context (where
wavelengths are required to be at least twenty
times the water depth).
23. Boundary conditions
 The boundary conditions are fixed for each
border's point. They fix dependant values
compute by the software : water height, velocities,
flow
 The user could mix different sort of boundary
conditions.
 Boundary conditions could by variable in time
and/or in space.
 Q.f which fix the flow.SL.f which impose the free
surface level.
 VIT.f which impose the velocity components.
24.  The user could also impose simple boundary
conditions with key-words in the parameter folder.
 The boundary conditions folder created by
MATISSE shows for each point, the type of the
boundary choosen.
 It could be conditions of height (imposed or free),
of velocity (imposed or free) or marker
concentration imposed. The key-words relatives to
these specific conditions are:
 COTES IMPOSES,
 DEBITS IMPOSES,
 VITESSES IMPOSEES
28. HYDRODYNAMIC
SIMULATION
Initial conditions
 Before running a simulation, the user has to impose
initial conditions The key-word is CONDITIONS
INITIALES. The value is for this case another key-
word between :- COTE NULLE : the free surface level
is initialisated at 0 m.- COTE CONSTANTE : the free
surface level is initialisated at the value linked with the
key-word COTE INITIALE
 - HAUTEUR NULLE : the free surface level is the
bottom level.
 - HAUTEUR CONSTANTE : the height free surface
level is fixed by the key-word HAUTEUR INITIALE.
 The subroutine CONDIN.f permits to fix the height of
water level, the velocity,... on each boundary point.
29. Tools of the Software
Tools can be assessed by 3 ways
 Via Tool bar
 Via menu view
 Via the pop-up menu of view
33. Inter Relationship With GIS
 Data can be exported and imported from GIS
in Telemac
 Editing of Data can be done
34.
35. Conclusion
 Useful tool for modeling
 Has vast applications
 User friendly workable window
 Exporting and Importing of Data in other
softwares is available
 Editing is easy
 Results are handy
