1. TEFLON DON Donald Askew Jr., perhaps better known as Teflon Don, grew up in the
Breedlove neighborhood of Smoky City, in Memphis, Tennessee. For most
of his childhood, Teflon was without his father (who was a professional
boxer at the time); he was raised by his mother and grandmother as an
only child. His mother, a single mom working three jobs to pay the bills,
had to rely heavily on his grandmother in the early 90s. She raised him
most of his life, and inspired him to follow his heart and dreams. On April
29, 2001, he made the weighty decision to join the army. It was then,
while stationed at Fort Hood (Texas), that he got his nickname, “Teflon
Don.” With such a wealth of experiences to draw from in his music, it’s
no surprise that Teflon Don’s debut effort, “God, The Government, The
Game” was a nominee for Best Indie Rap Album of the Year in 2009. This
is the same year that he created the NBA anthem for the Memphis Griz-
zlies, titled “M.E.M.P.H.I.S. Grizzlies.” Then came ringtone and distribution
deals with VIO Mobile and Select-O-Hits, and not one, but two movie
soundtrack deals in 2009 and 2010 for Money Makers and Daylight Fades.
In addition, Teflon landed a video game deal with Rock Band Network/
Harmonix Music for all future Rock Band Games and was signed to PTE/
SODMG for a one-year contract.
Teflon Don continues to release his music through his own Soul Star
Entertainment, formed in 2006. It was then that he released his first solo
