RESEARCHING GENRE
Genre is how anything artistic is divided into categories based on the elements
they have in common. Films have many genres and sub0genres that can be
hybrids of two genres (merged together.)
WHAT IS GENRE?
Romantic comedy films are a sub-genre of comedy films as well as romance
films. I have chosen to make a film opening typical of a romantic comedy as I
have watched many of them so therefore can identify and recreate the
elements that they possess. They use artistic shots but create a light hearted
feel to leave the audience with a happy ending after many humorous
obstacles.
ROMANTIC COMEDY…
‘Dinner for Schmucks’ (2010) has ‘Fool on a Hill’ by The Beatles playing as non
diegetic sound to accompany the opening sequence, which is a melodic piece of
music that accompanies the theme of love.
‘500 Days of Summer’ (2009) has music composed for the motion picture at the
start. The piece is made up of violins (signifying romance) and is upbeat to go
along with the introducing voice over.
‘The Devil Wears Prada’ (2009) opens with ‘Suddenly I See’ by KT Tunstall which
is also an upbeat song, setting the mood of the narrative as positive with a feel-
good theme.
‘Bridget Jones Diary’ (2001) contrasts with the above as it begins with the opposite
– a sad song in the form of ‘All By Myself’ by Celine Dion. Ballads are common
in Rom Coms.
COMMONALITY ONE : LOVE SONGS
The main characters are always made up of a man and a woman who meet and fall
in love… however, they usually don’t meet until further on in the narrative.
‘Notting Hill’ (1999) begins with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts first laying eyes on
each other in a comedy situation in a book shop.
‘The Bounty Hunter’ (2010) begins with a kidnap and a chase between Jennifer
Anniston and Gerard Butler accompanied by upbeat music which establish the
comedy elements and establish the two main characters as a man and a women in
conflict, signifying the romance element.
‘The Proposal’ (2009) opens with a cross cutting section between Sandra Bullock
and Ryan Reynolds, foreshadowing that they're going to have some sort of
relationship in the narrative.
COMMONALITY TWO : BOY MEETS
GIRL
‘The Notebook’ (2004) begins with shots of a lake at sunset with warm red
and orange colors connoting love and romance.
‘Holly’s Holiday’ (2012) opens with an establishing shot of a city landscape
and continues to go onto other various shots of New York at Christmas Time
which is a scenic, iconic setting.
‘Eat Pray Love’ (2010) opens with an Arial shot of a countryside setting using
long shot to establish the character's location. 'The Pill' (2011) also does this,
only with a wide shot of Central Park at night.
COMMONALITY THREE : A
SCENIC SETTING
After the scenic shots or even in between them when the boy meets girl or during the
crosscutting, one of the characters is usually tracked going somewhere after doing a everyday
activities like getting out of bed and getting ready.
‘Along Came Polly’ (2004) establishes this by showing Ben Stiller murmuring to himself and
walking down a corridor, making final arrangements to the wedding (connotes romance.)
‘The Devil Wears Prada’ (2006) tracks Anne Hathaway getting ready, buying breakfast and
walking through a busy city to a big office block for a job interview.
‘LOL’ (2012) tracks Miley Cyrus walking through high school with her friends and kissing her
boyfriend , following the establishing shot of a city landscape.
‘Swinging with the Finkels’ (2011) shows Martin Freeman walking through the a busy street
(with upbeat string instruments in the background) on his way to meet a woman (boy meets
girl) where the titles are displayed on the menu that he picked up and put in front of his face.
COMMONALITY FOUR: TRACKING
To create a successful opening sequence to a film of the romantic comedy genre, I
will have to include some of the commonalities I have found in other romantic
comedies. The shots should be edited together with a non diegetic, love song in
the background (either upbeat or a slow ballad to mirror the protagonist's mood.)
It should begin with the classic situation of boy meets girl or a situation that
foreshadows the character meeting someone and falling in love. There should be
either one or several establishing shots of a scenic location (either city or
countryside) to begin the opening and accompany the initial titles. Following this
establishing shot, there should be a scene of a character doing an everyday activity
and then shot with continuity or tracked going somewhere, all the while with little
or no dialogue, simply ambient sound effects and the non diegetic music.
I want to create an opening sequence taking main inspiration from the beginning
of ‘Holly’s Holiday’ and ‘Swinging with the Finkels.’
HOW I’LL CREATE THIS
