The Law of Diffusion of Innovation describes how an idea or product gains momentum and spreads through a social system over time. According to this theory, the population adopts an innovation in an S-shaped curve where the first few individuals adopt it, then adoption increases rapidly before leveling off as the late majority and laggards adopt the innovation. The theory identifies five categories of adopters - innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority, and laggards.
