Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
Threats to mobile devices are more prevalent and increasing in scope and complexity. Users of mobile devices desire to take full advantage of the features
available on those devices, but many of the features provide convenience and capability but sacrifice security. This best practices guide outlines steps the users can take to better protect personal devices and information.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

This presentation accompanies Digital Life: Computer Concepts Projects.
In this chapter, you will learn how technology is used today, and how life has changed because of it.
The following objectives will be covered:
Describe How Technology is Used Today
Describe How Life has Changed Through the Use of Technology and Identify Common Technologies Used Today
Ubiquitous means being everywhere, all the time. Ubiquitous computing is having computerized devices in our lives and using these devices to help with daily tasks. Think of how often you use computers in a day.
How technology has changed our lives in the way we purchase music, watch movies, play games, workplace productivity, and personal communication.
How technology has changed our lives in the way we travel, advertise, track items, buy a home, receive an education.
The process of purchasing music has drastically changed. Instead of walking into a store to purchase music on media such as a record or tape, music can be previewed and purchased online and immediately downloaded to a computer, tablet, or smartphone in a matter of minutes. When was the last time you purchased music online or listened to a tune played with a music app?
Thousands of songs can be stored on an MP3 player.
Instead of going to a theater or waiting for a scheduled movie on television or going to a local video rental store, you can now watch movies on demand on a television or stream a video to a computer or smartphone. Have you watched a video on a computer or smartphone or observed someone else doing this?
Games could be played in arcades or on game consoles at home. Multiple players could participate, but they needed to be in the same location to play the game. Online games allow players to play with many individuals from around the world at the same time. Do you have a game console at your home, or have you installed a game app on a smartphone?
Game controls for a home-based video game.
Paper-based documents were used for many productivity needs, and paper calendars were used to maintain schedules. Now, documents can be read on smartphones or tablets. Calendars and task lists can be managed using email programs and can be viewed from any location. Calendars can be programmed to send reminder notices of events to a phone or tablet. Smartphone productivity apps permit users to create documents, calendars, presentations, or other tasks from their handheld devices. Have you received an email message on your smartphone?
When people were not in the same location, they relied on telephones or the postal service. Improvements were made by the introduction of cordless home phones and caller ID. With the advent of cellular phones, in addition to voice communication, video, using Skype or FaceTime, and text communications using SMS are now possible. How many minutes ago did you send your last text message?
When going on vacation, travelers called or wrote to the chamber of commerce of the location to which they were traveling to get information. To find their way, they would get maps from the AAA or visit a local gas station. Today, all this information is available online. TripAdvisor has information on tourist locations, online maps are available that can use a smartphone’s GPS system, to not only show the route, but where you are located on the route, as well as destination time and distance.
Businesses used the local phone book and placed ads on the radio, television, billboards, flyers, and signs. Businesses still use these advertising methods, but also rely on QR codes, banner ads on websites, emails, social networking websites, and company websites. Do you have a QR or barcode app on your phone, and have you used it recently?
Businesses used the local phone book as an important source of advertisement.
Prior to the use of bar code readers, businesses manually conducted and tracked inventory. Businesses use radio frequency identification tags to track the movement of their inventories. RFID tags can be placed on individual pieces or pallets of inventory, and followed as they travel through the supply chain. To prevent theft, individual clothing items can also be tracked within retail stores.
Buyers contacted a realtor and were shown listing information, from which buyers would select potential homes. Realtors made arrangements to accompany buyers to visit a house. Potential buyers browse homes online, viewing all the listing information, including pictures and video tours. Have you used online sources to rent an apartment or view dorm rooms?
Educational was largely paper-based—notes, assignments, and tests. Classroom instruction focused on the teacher giving lectures to students. Classes may be taught online or are highly interactive through the use of technology. Courses may be taught without the use of paper as students take notes on computers, download assignment instructions, and submit assignments through online course management systems. Classes are much more interactive as students use a variety of technologies to interact with the teacher, other students, or the course content. Have you taken an online or partial online course? In a traditional class, have you downloaded course materials or submitted an electronic assignment?
Computers are everywhere and are used in most aspects of our lives.
Information gathering has moved from slow, paper-based resources to virtually immediate, digital-based resources.
Technology is used to complete tasks more quickly and more effectively and to communicate efficiently.
