12. “ THE ENEMY OF GREAT IS GOOD” WHAT DO WE WANT TO BE?

Where do we want our school to be? Do we want our students to be left behind in this age of technology, or do we want to provide them with the best experience possible. Tonight I am going to speak to you about why and how of technology and why it is so vital to our school.
During the course of this presentation I am going to focus on 4 main points. They are: Students Learning with technology Closing the digital divide among our teachers Integration of classroom technology Advanced technology – web based learning
There are two sets of outcomes when it comes to technology, student and teacher. Student outcomes are: Advanced writing and research skills which enables our students to be more literate as well as more knowledgeable by skills they have learned Direct Their own learning which gives students the sense of ownership in their learning Improved Problem Solving Skills which allows our students to think on their feet and be independent Deeper and more flexible use of technology which provides our students with the necessary skills to be proficient in society Teacher outcomes are: More constructive approach to teaching, which gives our teachers more meaning and relevance into their lessons Feel more empowered in the classroom because of all the different tools that are available to use. No longer does a teacher have to feel hand cuffed because of the lack of tools or resources Spend less time lectureing, which in result, is more time for the studetns to be doing and learning. Curriculum is a one size fits all, and this enables our teachers to design their lessons to fit the needs of the students.
This is an example of how technology helps in our school. Teacher gets trained in her brand new super math pro software. This then leads to the students using the computer for simulations and application problems which equals higher math achievment.
In order to have this happen we must get rid of the digital divide. (read definition). There is a digital divide among not just the teachers in our school, but teachers in all schools because of routine. Teachers fall into a routine and stay there. They stay there because of little or no training. If our teachers do not know how to use technology, how do we expect them to implement it in their classrooms. And lastly, a lot of teachers are scared of change and scared of technology.
The best way to close the gap in the digital divide is to provide adaquete and relavent professional development opportunities for our teachers. These opportunities could be in powerschool, atomic learning, activboards, MS Office, windows and Mac products
Once our teachers have the knowledge in technology, we need to start to integrate technology into our school and into our classroom. A lot of school are moving to what they call “laptop schools” where each student is given a laptop just like they would a textbook. (read bullets) A suvey conducted in Maine showed the GPA in grades 6,7 and 8 was higher among laptop schools vs. non laptop schools.
Along with laptops, interactive whiteboards are another excellent way for our students to be exposed to technolgy in their learning. (read bullets)
Some of the advanced technology we would like to get to in our school is Web Based Learning which is electronic larning. Students will have online assignments, get notes online, use online tools, and teachers will prepare online lessons using the online tools.
Some of these online web based learning tools are blogs, wiki’s, online meetings, websites.
Just like anything else, there are pro’s and con’s to everything. As you will see though, the Pro’s clearly outweigh the con’s.
We are a “good” school, with “good” teachers, but the enemy of GREAT is good. What do we want to be?
