MakingHistoryinthe GrandCanyonand MachuPicchu
As part of Team See Possibilities, Dan Berlin has already made history twice. In October2014, he
became the first blind runner to cross the Grand Canyon and back “rim to rim to rim” nonstop, a 46-
mile trek with over20,000 feet of elevation change. And in October 2015, the group traversed the
length of the Inca Trail to the ancient citadel of Machu Picchuin Peru. The treacherous, 26-mile
route starts at 9,000 feet above sea level and crosses over three mountain passes. The trek normally
takes fourdays to complete. Team See Possibilities did it in 13 hours. These accomplishments were
featured in press around the world, including BBC, CBS Evening News, FOX News National, Outside
Magazine, and many others (see media coverage list below).
Mt. Kilimanjaro
In November 2016, Dan, Alison, Charles and Brad willattempt to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro nonstop.
The trek is approximately 50 miles long and is normally completed in six or seven days. At 19,300
feet above sea level, Mt. Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa. If successful, Dan will become
the first blind athlete to climb to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro and back nonstop.
Local Event
Working with their main sponsor, Intrepid Travel, Team See Possibilities is exploring the possibility
of supporting a charity event near Mt. Kilimanjaro on Friday, November 11. The purpose of the
event will be to raise money for and awareness of local effortsin the region to support children who
are blind. Government officialsand press willbe invited.
Bio’s:
DanBerlin: Grew up in the chocolatetown of Hershey, Pennsylvania, and now co-ownsRodelle,
one of the world’s leading vanilla extract companies based in Colorado, where he lives with his wife
and twochildren. Overthe course of twenty years, Dan gradually lost his eyesight from cone-rod
dystrophy. He struggled with the limitations of his new reality, but instead of simply feeling sorry
for himself, he came up with a new way to approach the rest of his life. He decided, despite his
blindness, to become a marathoner. Dan has since run twelvemarathons, including NYC and
Boston, completed several Half Ironman triathlons, was the first blind athlete to run across the
Grand Canyon and back, and recently completed his greatest challenge to date: running the Classic
Inca Trail to Machu Picchunonstop.
CharlesScott:Left a 14-year career at Intel Corporation to become an adventure speaker. A
National Geographic-featured adventurer and author of two books,he gives keynotes and executive
workshops about developing an adventurous mindset. Charles has cycledover 7,000 miles with his
young children across Japan, Iceland, Europe and the U.S., and has been featured in media around
the world. He is also a guide to disabled athletes and co-founderof the nonprofit Team See
Possibilities, whichsupports efforts around the worldto help children who are blind. Charles
workedat Intel Corporation for14 years in a variety of management positions, including Director in
Intel Capital, the corporation’s venture investment group. He ran his first marathon at age 13, has
completed six Ironman triathlons, and guided Dan in fivemarathons and a Half Ironman. For more
details on Charles’s background, see: http://familyadventureguy.blogspot.com.
AlisonQualter Berna:Co-founder of apple seeds, an international children’s play space based in
New YorkCity, and mother of three young children. She has a Masters Degree fromPrinceton and
workedin production at NBC News. She started and then managed a global program in Sports for
Development at the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for5 years (2001-2006). She was a
competitive high school athlete and still elicits “wows” frompeople whosee her handstands and
yoga practice. She struggles, like all workingmoms, to balance career and life…let alone find the
amount of time needed to train. Alison was intimidated by the idea of guiding a blind athlete for the
first time in the Grand Canyon, in her longest running distance, and on such complicated terrain.
For some of the lessons she learned, see http://mamalode.com/story/detail/five-lessons-i-learned-

and happenings, see www.appleseedsplay.com
BradGraff:A graduate of Harvard Business School and former Naval Officer,he lefta 17-year
career at Intel Corporation and co-founded the nonprofit Team See Possibilities. A runner whohas
completed over 20 marathons and half marathons, he recently added ultra marathons to the
competitive mix. He had never taken on quite the type of challenge he faced as one of Dan’s guides
in the Grand Canyon, nor had he been responsible foranother person’s safety to this extent. He’s on
the west coast, far from the team, which means he prepared on his own.
