Twenty children and six adults were killed in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012. The gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, killed his mother at home and then opened fire at the school. He killed himself as police arrived at the scene. President Obama addressed the nation to express sorrow for the victims. Details emerged about the victims, including heroic actions by teachers who lost their lives trying to save students. The nation mourned this tragic loss of life.
This document discusses the link between college binge drinking culture and the prevalence of sexual assault on campuses. It notes that peer pressure and desire for acceptance leads many students, especially freshmen, to binge drink, leaving both victims and perpetrators vulnerable. Through personal stories of victims who were assaulted after drinking, the document explores the difficulties of obtaining justice, given he said/she said dynamics and rape myths that blame victims. It advocates for universities to take the problem more seriously through policies that address binge drinking culture and support for victims.
This document discusses bullying in schools. It defines bullying as harming or scaring another person repeatedly. Bullying can take various forms, including physical, verbal, social, and cyber bullying. The document provides national statistics on bullying prevalence and effects. It notes that bullying disproportionately impacts LGBT youth. Risk factors for youth suicide are discussed, as bullying is linked to increased suicide rates. Various bullying stories and prevention strategies are also outlined.
The document discusses how the increased involvement of law enforcement in inner-city schools has contributed to poor academic outcomes. It argues that despite declining teen violence, the "fear of black violence" has led to police becoming fixtures in these schools through the 1960s. Strict zero-tolerance policies have further criminalized minor offenses. While schools report high numbers of police officers, research shows this level of policing is unnecessary and disproportionately impacts minority students, making them feel like criminals and deterring them from attending school.
This document outlines a research plan to investigate disparities in student achievement in Portland public high schools. The group aims to examine how school demographics like racial composition and socioeconomic class vary between districts. They will analyze data on graduation rates, test scores, class sizes, free lunch eligibility and other factors. Based on literature showing racial gaps in achievement elsewhere, the group hypothesizes that minority students in Portland schools graduate at lower rates than white students. Variables of interest are race as the independent variable and graduation as the dependent variable, accounting for gender and socioeconomic status.

Two teachers named Cathy Smith and Cathy Harris decided to have a "Cathy war" to determine which one could keep the name, as having two Cathys would confuse the students. They planned three events for the Cathy war, but the principal Kerry intervened and only allowed one competition, a race. Cathy Harris sprinted at first but had to stop to catch her breath, while Cathy Smith jogged past her to cross the finish line first. Cathy Smith got to keep the name, and the two teachers agreed to be friends.

Virginia High School Teacher Arrested for Sexting Student
A 27-year-old high school teacher in Virginia was busted for sexting a former student after his parents found nude pictures of her on his cell phone, police said.
Cara Alexander, an English teacher at Woodside High School in Newport News, was arrested Friday and charged with several offenses, including contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The 17-year-old student told his parents that he was also in a sexual relationship with Alexander, a full-time ninth-grade teacher at the school since 2010, reported ABC affiliate WVEC-TV.
While the teen was previously under Alexander’s watch, he currently attends a different school, a Newport News Public Schools spokeswoman told The Virginian-Pilot.
Officials didn’t immediately say how long Alexander had allegedly been sexting the teen, although they don’t believe they engaged in any inappropriate activity on school grounds.
1. Do you think the “add and stir” approach can explain the behavior of the female teacher? Why or why not?
2. Do you think sex roles can explain the behavior of the female teacher?
3. Do you think she committed a crime? Does she deserve to be punished? If so, what type of punishment should she receive?
4. If you were the parent of the student, how would you feel about her behavior?
Davenport High School Teacher Arrested for Sexting
A second-year high school teacher faced a judge for the first time late Thursday afternoon on 47 charges that would get any parent fired up.
Dale Pennington is accused of using his position as a teacher at Ridge Community High School in Davenport to engage in a highly inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old girl. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said it started last spring when the girl was in Pennington’s world history class.
“She’s a student and he began to text with her,” he said. “And it went from texting to sexting.”
Then from sexting to e-mailing porn videos and discussing their fantasies of having sex together, Judd said. As of now, there’s no evidence the two actually had sex, but investigators say Pennington told them he would have had sex with her, if they could have arranged it.
"I'm just to the point of being numb," said Judd at a news conference Thursday afternoon. “We want to do our best to make sure this guy goes to prison. He needs to go to prison on his own accord for this conduct."
Parents at Ridge Community High School learned of the arrest through a message from the school.
“A big surprise,” said Lourdes Albizu, whose daughter, Diana, had Pennington as a teacher last year and thought he was a good teacher.
She said she's never had a problem with the school, but this case does raise more questions.

On April 26th, a text message was sent to several students referring to Rachel Ehmke as a "slut". On April 27th, four students reported this text to the principal. On April 28th, Rachel attempted suicide and later died. An investigation found the text originated from Rachel's father's residence, and she may have sent it herself. Harassment and bullying were likely factors in her death, though she had problems with multiple people over several months. No single person is believed responsible for her death.
Abusive foster mother gets 14 years in prisonBy JOHN IWASAKI, P-.docxnettletondevon
An abusive foster mother, Chornice Kabbelliyaa, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for torturing her foster daughter over many years. She stabbed the girl's eyes with needles, burned her tongue with a heated fork, and dropped weights on her feet. Despite many warnings from authorities about the girl's suspicious injuries, the state failed to remove her from Kabbelliyaa's home until she had lost vision in one eye. A review found a systemic failure by the Department of Social and Health Services and other groups to adequately protect the girl.
T.J. Lane, a 17-year-old student at an alternative high school, confessed to opening fire with a .22-caliber pistol at a cafeteria table at Chardon High School, killing three students and wounding two others. Prosecutors said Lane chose his victims at random and did not know them. Lane appeared in juvenile court and was said to be a quiet student who was alone by those who knew him, though he had no prior legal trouble. The families of the two students who died honored their wishes to donate organs to help others.
A Study Of Child Sex Offenders Characteristics And MotivationsLori Mitchell
This document summarizes a literature review on characteristics and motivations of child sex offenders. It finds that offenders can generally be classified into two types: regressed offenders who victimize acquainted children, and fixated offenders who target unknown children and use grooming. Regressed offenders seem motivated by power and control, while fixated offenders have a faulty perception of mating partners. Most victims are female children under age 14, and abuse often goes unreported, as many offenders are family members able to conceal crimes for years. Further research is needed to better characterize and classify offenders.
1) Sexual harassment of students by teachers is prevalent, with 38% of sexually harassed students reporting the abuse was by a teacher. Sexual harassment includes quid pro quo harassment and creating a hostile environment.
2) Title IX and court cases like Franklin v. Gwinnett County have established protections and allowed monetary damages for students sexually harassed by teachers.
3) Prominent cases like Mary Kay Latourneau and Debra Lafave received media attention and resulted in criminal charges for teachers who had sexual relationships with students. Clear policies and teacher training are needed to prevent further abuse.

Essex, nathan l. sexual violence and public schools nfeasj v33 n4 2015William Kritsonis
This document discusses sexual violence in public schools and the liability implications for school leaders. It begins by defining sexual violence and providing statistics on its prevalence among students. School leaders have a legal duty to protect students and could face lawsuits for negligence if they knew or should have known about sexual violence occurring but failed to respond. The standard of care requires school personnel to protect students in a way that other reasonable educators would. Examples of lawsuits against schools related to sexual violence are provided. The document concludes with guidelines for schools to address sexual violence, including defining it clearly and establishing reporting procedures to help minimize liability risks.
