TBWA was founded in 1970 in Paris by four founders, whose initials made up the agency's name. It is now headquartered in New York City after being purchased by Omnicom in 1993. TBWA has been involved in various projects for businesses and was named the Global Agency Network of the Year in 2004 and of the Decade in 2010. One project included a 2002 John Smith beer advert featuring a generic football field and people kicking a ball around, with British comedian Peter Kay as a celebrity endorsement.
