HMV was founded on July 20th, 1921 originally selling gramophones and music discs. The company took its name and logo from a famous 1899 painting called "His Master's Voice" which depicted a dog named Nipper listening intently to a gramophone. The painting became widely popular after the wealthy purchased copies, and so the gramophone company adopted the painting's name and image of the dog listening to establish its brand.
