Soil Amendment dari Thailand
        PERANAN & FUNGSI
•Membantu memulih dan meningkat tahap kesuburan tanah
               •Menguraikan jisim organik
•Meningkatkan kadar mineral sedia ada kepada tumbuhan
                  •Menguraikan toksin
       •Menggalakkan pertumbuhan akar yang sihat
    •Membantu mengurangkan FUNGAL, PATHOGEN,
NEMATODE dan LAIN-LAIN PENYAKIT dalam tanah
•Membantu tanaman mempunyai daya tahan penyakit dan
                cuaca panas & kemarau
           •Membantu meningkatkan pH tanah
Soil Amendment dari Thailand
PERMASALAHAN OLEH PETANI
 • Struktur tanah yang lemah / rosak
         • Penyakit tanaman
• Pengurangan kualiti dan kuantiti hasil
           produk pertanian
• Terdapat mikrob pemusnah (pathogen).
• Menyekat eco sistem semulajadi ( mikro organisma).
• Mampu meningkat produktiviti tanaman.
Pengertian kandungan tanah subur

HISTORY OF DATES
• Dates have been a staple food of the Middle East for thousands of
years. They are believed to have originated around the Persian Gulf,
and have been cultivated since ancient times from Mesopotamia to
prehistoric Egypt, possibly as early as 4000 BCE. The Ancient
Egyptians used the fruits to be made into date wine, and ate them at
harvest. The Egyptians also ate another fruit of the Palm Tree, The
Fruits of The Doum Palm. There is archaeological evidence of date
cultivation in eastern Arabia in 6000 BCE. (Alvarez-Mon 2006).

• In later times, Arabs spread dates around South and South West Asia,
northern Africa, and Spain and Italy. Dates were introduced into
Mexico and California by the Spaniards in 1765

Thai Date Palms
Planting – Dig a 50 x 50 centimeter hole and line the
bottom with manure or compost. Planting at 8 x 8 meter
intervals will get 25 plants per rai. Date palms do not
like excessively wet or damp areas.

Care and Maintenance – Date palms should be watered
approximately every 5-7 days, or according to the
dampness of soil. Quality date palms should be given
sufficient water at a consistent rate.

Fertilizer – The use of manure will result in 1-2 kilograms of produce, twice a year, per tree; together with
proper maintenance of soil and eradication of weeds surrounding each plant.

Trimming – Aged leaves of date palms tend to get dry and it is recommended that they are cut off to aid in
the maintenance of plants, keeping it clean and reducing any possible problems that may arise from pests
and insects, although date palms generally have very few problems with pests.

Harvesting – Based on the color of the date palm, fruits can be harvested when they have turned a dark
yellow. The fruits are oval in shape and grow in bunches or clusters with 4 developmental phases
consisting of unripe, mature, ripe, and dried, with the entire 4 periods from flowering to harvesting
  lasting between 7-8 months.

Storage – Ripe date palms stored at 8 degrees Celsius can
be kept for 1 year.

Pollination
In collecting male pollen, male plants flower before female
plants and can be noticed when the blossom or spedix
begins to protrude. When the blossom breaks open,
within will be the flower with jagged petals. Cover the
flower with a plastic bag and shake, the pollen will
disperse inside the bag. Remove excess air within the bag,
close and seal the bag and refrigerate.

First Date Palms developed for fresh consumption, made possible in Thailand .
Date palms are one of the many plants in the diverse palm family, originally found in the middle-eastern
regions of Northern Africa, both as single trunks and clusters. The trunks grow to about 30 meters height
with circumferences of between 30 – 50 cm. Flower clusters sprout from the base of leaves, with each
trunk consisting of approximately 40 – 60 leave stems. The leaves can measure up to 30 – 50 centimeters
and are shaped much like feathers while subsidiary leaves sprout in all directions. Date palms are
commonly bred through the planting of seeds or shoots, producing rather slow developments. Thai date
palms are often planted for gardening and ornamental purposes, with spade-shaped fruits of about 2 – 4
centimeters.

Ripe date palms mature from yellow to an orange colour and while edible, are not commonly consumed
as the fruits are small and astringentin taste. The fruits distributed in department stores are preserved or
processed date palms with an extremely sweet taste, often imported from abroad, with high prices of
approximately 500 – 600 baht per kilogram, highest in quality being imported from Israel.

Khun Sak Lumjuan the agriculturalist and owner of “Date Farm”
farm, located in Thailand, briefly outlined that after graduating as
the 36th class from Maejo University and beginning his career in
retail as the owner of a distribution outlet of agricultural tools, he
began to think that date palms, commonly grown for ornamental
purposes, should also be freshly consumed or processed as done
abroad. With that thought, he began planting date palms, starting
with 30 trees, planted in plots with a distance of
8 x 8 meters.

Research and Development within the Department of Agriculture. Professor Pasayawan provided
guidelines on new breeding methods that would aid in the pollination of the female flower by placing the
male pollen inside a plastic bag and refrigerating it until the female flower has fully matured before
covering the female flower with the plastic bag in which the male pollen has been stored. This process aids
in the production of numerous date palm fruits which.
When fully mature , can be used for further breeding, gaining ideal breeding plants to be used for phase 2.
Date palms planted in phase 2 produce fruits that have various beneficial qualities and are easy to plant,
much like coconuts. To enable rapid development, the plot in which the date palm is to be planted should
be lined with manure and compost or organic fertilizers, avoiding humid and soggy areas,
and providing a moderate amount of water with only
a slight increase during periods of drought. The leaves
of these date palm trees are of a whiter colour than

sunlight or light, the leave will turn an illuminated white.
In comparison to the planting of date palms abroad, the
total amount of time from planting to fruition is 3 years ,
whereas elsewhere it is said to take up to 7 years. Aside
from the ability to provide fruits 2 times annually , there
have been no recorded instances of infestations of pests
or diseases. The first harvest is towards the end of
January while the second harvest is in early July, whereas
date palms planted abroad can only be harvested once a
                                                 year.

The date palms are produced in large quantities with large fruits, lots of flesh, and small seeds .
When mature, the fruits turn a dark yellow and can be consumed, once the flesh is soft and crisp, without
removing the skin. Ripe date palms turn brown and experience an increase in sweetness, measured at
approximately 17-20 Brix. If stored at around 8 degrees Celsius, the fruits can be kept for up to 1 year
without being preserved. Aside from being able to freshly consume date palms, these fruits also contain
qualities that aid in the reduction of thirst and dehydration, as well as the reduction of phlegm. Current
developments have been coordinated with the Department of Agriculture to certify this date palm as a
species and as an organic plant species that contains no chemicals and pesticides, in hopes that the
stability and characteristics of this species may enable further reproduction through means of tissue
cultivation.

Date nutritional value
With the present uncertainty in the world food supply and the expected increase in
demand, the date palm could be a good source of food of high nutritional value. In
fact, date fruit is rich in nutrients, and due to its dietetic values it has always
been held in high esteem by people. Compared to other fruits and foods
(apricot: 520 calories/kg; banana: 970 calories/kg; orange: 480 calories/kg;
cooked rice: 1,800 calories/kg; wheat bread: 2,295 calories/kg; meat (without
fat): 2,245 calories/kg, dates give more than 3,000 calories per kilogram.

The date fruit consists of 70 % carbohydrates (mostly sugars), making it one of
the most nourishing natural foods available to man. The water content is
between 15 to 30 % depending on the variety and on the maturity stage of the
fruit.

In most varieties, the sugar content of a date fruit is almost entirely of the
inverted form (namely glucose and fructose), important for persons who cannot
tolerate sucrose The invert sugar in dates is immediately absorbed by the
human body without being subjected to the digestion that ordinary sugar
undergoes.

The flesh of dates contains 60 to 65 % sugar, about 2.5 % fibre, 2 % protein and
less than 2 % each of fat, minerals, and pectin substances. Date fruits are also a
good source of iron, potassium and calcium, with a very low sodium and fat
content. In addition, moderate quantities of chlorine, phosphorous, copper,
magnesium, silicon and sulphur are also found in the date fruit
• Date fruit is called a mine in itself because it is very rich in minerals. Its
phosphorous content is similar to that found in the same quantity of apricots,
    pears and grapes put together.

• Its high content of magnesium (±600 mg/1kg of dates) could also be very beneficial.
Date consumers in Saharan areas are known to have the lowest rate of cancer
diseases, a fact attributed to the magnesium found in dates.

• With only 1 mg of sodium per 100 g , dates are good food for those on a low sodium
diet. The iron content of 3 mg per 100g is almost a third of the Recommended Dietary
Allowance for an adult male. Note that fibre, even though it is not a nutrient for
humans, is of much value in a diet as an aid to digestion and evacuation. There is
ample evidence that for most persons a diet fairly high in fibre is healthier than one
    low in fibre.

• Furthermore, dates are a good source of vitamins A, B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin),
and B7 (nicotinic acid also called niacin). The following contents per kilogram are an
average for all date varieties: vitamin A, 484 international units; B1, 0.77 milligram
    (mg); B2, 0.84 mg; and B7, 18.9 mg.

• According to Genske and Weers, (1973), one kilogram of the flesh of ripe Deglet
Noor dates contains the following: water (220g), sugar (730g; 2740 calories), proteins
    (22g), Fats (2g) and minerals (19g,) K 6480mg), P (630mg), Ca (590mg), Mg
    (580mg), Fe (30mg) and Na (10mg)), vitamin A (500 units), vitamin B1 (0.9mg),
    vitamin B2 (1mg) and vitamin B7 (22mg).
Traditional medicinal uses

• Dates have a high tannin content and are used medicinally as a
detersive (having cleansing power) and astringent in intestinal
troubles.[citation needed] As an infusion, decoction, syrup, or paste, dates may
be administered for sore throat, colds, bronchial catarrh, and taken to
relieve fever and a number of other complaints.[citation needed] One traditional
belief is that it can counteract alcohol intoxication. The seed powder is
also used in some traditional medicines.

• A gum that exudes from the wounded trunk is employed in India for
treating diarrhea and genito-urinary ailments.[citation needed] The roots are used
against toothache. The pollen yields an estrogenic principle, estrone,
and has a gonadotropic effect on young rats.
Food uses
• Dry or soft dates are eaten out-of-hand, or may be pitted and stuffed with fillings such as almonds
, walnuts, candied orange and lemon peel, tahini, marzipan or cream cheese. Pitted dates are also
referred to as stoned dates. Dates can also be chopped and used in a range of sweet and savory
dishes, from tajines (tagines) in Morocco to puddings, ka'ak (types of Arab cookies) and other
dessert items. Dates are also processed into cubes, paste called "'ajwa", spread, date syrup or "
honey" called "dibs" or "rub" in Libya, powder (date sugar), vinegar or alcohol. Recent
innovations include chocolate-covered dates and products such as sparkling date juice, used in
some Islamic countries as a non-alcoholic version of champagne, for special occasions and
    religious times such as Ramadan.

• Dates can also be dehydrated, ground and mixed with grain to form a nutritious stockfeed. Dried
dates are fed to camels, horses and dogs in the Sahara. In northern Nigeria, dates and peppers
added to the native beer are believed to make it less intoxicating.

• Young date leaves are cooked and eaten as a vegetable, as is the terminal bud or heart, though its
removal kills the palm. The finely ground seeds are mixed with flour to make bread in times of
scarcity. The flowers of the date palm are also edible. Traditionally the female flowers are the
most available for sale and weigh 300–400 grams. The flower buds are used in salad or ground
with dried fish to make a condiment for bread.
Food uses
• According to a study by Al-Shahib and Marshall, in many ways, "dates may be considered
as an almost ideal food, providing a wide range of essential nutrients and potential health
benefits." The sugar content of ripe dates is about 80%; the remainder consists of protein,
fiber, and trace elements including boron, cobalt, copper, fluorine, magnesium,
    manganese, selenium, and zinc[2]

• In India and Pakistan, North Africa, Ghana, and Côte d'Ivoire, date palms are tapped for the
sweet sap, which is converted into palm sugar (known as jaggery or gur), molasses or
alcoholic beverages. In North Africa the sap obtained from tapping palm trees is known as
lāgbī (pronounced [laːɡ biː ]). If left for a sufficient period of time (typically hours,
depending on the temperature) lāgbī easily becomes an alcoholic drink. Special skill is
required when tapping the palm tree so that it does not die.

• In Southeast Spain (where a large date plantation exists including UNESCO protected
Palmeral of Elche) dates (usually pitted with fried almond) are served wrapped in bacon
    and shallow fried.
Other uses of the plant
 1) Date seeds are soaked and ground up for animal feed. Their oil is suitable for use in soap and
cosmetics. They can also be processed chemically as a source of oxalic acid. The seeds are also
burned to make charcoal for silversmiths, and can be strung in necklaces. Date seeds are also
ground and used in the manner of coffee beans, or as an additive to coffee.

2) Stripped fruit clusters are used as brooms. In Pakistan, a viscous, thick syrup made from the ripe
fruits is used as a coating for leather bags and pipes to prevent leaking.
Date palm sap is used to make palm syrup and numerous edible products derived from the syrup.

3) Date palm leaves are used for Palm Sunday in the Christian religion. In North Africa, they are
commonly used for making huts. Mature leaves are also made into mats, screens, baskets and fans.
Processed leaves can be used for insulating board. Dried leaf petioles are a source of cellulose pulp,
used for walking sticks, brooms, fishing floats and fuel. Leaf sheaths are prized for their scent, and
fibre from them is also used for rope, coarse cloth, and large hats.

4) Date palm wood is used for posts and rafters for huts; it is lighter than coconut and not very durable.
It is also used for construction such as bridges and aqueducts, and parts of dhows. Leftover wood is
     burnt for fuel.

Breaking fast with eating dates helps us to avoid overeating of the food after
the fast. When the body absorbs the nutritional value of the dates, the feeling of
    hunger gets pacified.
Health Benefits of Dates
• Dates are termed as a crown of sweets and ideal food which easily balances
and digests food. It gives extra energy to a tired human body within half an
hour after taking it. Dates are considered to be the best diet for confinement of
the women. American Cancer Society recommends intake of 20-35 grams of
dietary fibre in a day, supplied through dates. It is said that taking one date in a
day will help you to maintain your healthy eyes for your lifetime. They are quiet

effective in guarding the night blindness problems .
Health Benefits of Dates
• Constipation: Date is termed to be a laxative food. This is the reason that dates
are beneficial for people suffering from constipation. For getting the laxative effect
from dates, you need to soak dates for one full night in water. You should consume
these soaked dates in the morning like syrup to get their actual advantages.

• Intestinal Disorders: The nicotinic content that is present in the dates is said to
be beneficial for curing any kinds of intestinal disorders. Continuous intake of dates
helps to maintain a check on the growth of the pathological organisms and thus,
helps in the rise of friendly bacteria in the intestines.

• Weight Gain: Dates are said to be a part of healthy diet. They consist of sugar,
fats, proteins as well as many essential vitamins. If the dates are consumed with the
paste of cucumber, one can easily come out from the problem of over-slimming. One
kilogram of dates contains almost 3,000 calories. These calories alone are sufficient

to meet the daily requirements of a human body .
Health Benefits of Dates
• Heart Wealth: Dates are quite helpful in maintaining your heart in healthy condition. When
soaked for whole night and crushed in the morning and consumed, they prove to be quite
advantageous for weak hearts. They help to fortify heart, if taken twice in the week.

• Sexual Weakness: Dates are even beneficial for increasing sexual stamina in the
human body. A handful of dates, when soaked in fresh goat's milk for the night and then grinded
in the same milk with the mixture of cardamom powder and honey, becomes a very useful tonic
for increasing sex endurance and sterility due to functional disorders.

• Diarrhea: Ripe dates contain potassium. Potassium is beneficial for controlling diarrhea.
They are easily digestible, which helps to cope up with the problems of diarrhea.

• Intoxication: Dates are known as an excellent remedy for alcoholic intoxication. Dates
provide quick relief in the case of alcoholic intoxication. They should be rubbed and soaked
overnight for getting more nutritious values from them.

• Abdominal Cancer: Dates are beneficial for curing abdominal cancer. They work as
useful tonic for all age groups. They work as better as the medicines, and are natural and do not
bear any side effects in the body. They can be easily digested and used for supplying extra and
    needed energy.

energy and repairing waste. Milk in which clean and fresh dates have been boiled is a very nourishing and
restorative drink to children and adults alike, especially during convalescence.

• Intestinal Disturbances :- The nicotinic content in dates is an excellent remedy for intestinal
disturbances. According to Metchnikoff, the great Russian scientist, liberal use of dates keeps in check the growth
of pathological organisms and helps to establish a colony of friendly bacteria in the intestines.

• Constipation :- The date is a laxative food. It is highly beneficial in the treatment of constipation as
the roughage provided by it stimulates sluggish bowels. They should be immersed in water at night and taken
after making them into a fine syrup the next morning to secure laxaive effect.

condition. It will strengthen the heart.

• Sexual Debility :- Dates are highly beneficial in the treatment of sexual packing condition and to
wash them thoroughly before use weakness. A handful of dates soaked in fresh goat's milk overnight should be
ground in the same milk in the morning. A pinch of cardamom powder and honey should be mixed in this
preparation. This becomes a very useful tonic for improving sex stamina and sterility due to functional disorders.

• Children's Diseases :- According to FAO a date tied to the wrist of the baby and allowed to be
sucked by him during teething time hardens the gums and prevents other complaints like fretfulness and diarrhea.
A teaspoonful of paste of the date prepared with honey is an effective medicine during diarrhea and dysentery

Investment and Return Period
Investment: 1 date tree price RM800 delivery and fertilizer cost included.
1 acre approximately can plant 62 date trees (25 trees per rai).
1 acre cost to invest RM49,600

Return Calculation: price of 1 kg for fresh date about RM15-RM25
             >> 1 date tree can produce 50 kg - 180 kg
so 1 acre can produce approximately (50 kg x 62 trees )3100 kg x 2 (twice a year)
= 6,200 kg
           take: 6,200 kg x RM15 = RM93,000 a year

Harvest Period: 3 years
Fertilizer: twice a year

  • 92. HISTORY OF DATES • Dates have been a staple food of the Middle East for thousands of years. They are believed to have originated around the Persian Gulf, and have been cultivated since ancient times from Mesopotamia to prehistoric Egypt, possibly as early as 4000 BCE. The Ancient Egyptians used the fruits to be made into date wine, and ate them at harvest. The Egyptians also ate another fruit of the Palm Tree, The Fruits of The Doum Palm. There is archaeological evidence of date cultivation in eastern Arabia in 6000 BCE. (Alvarez-Mon 2006). • In later times, Arabs spread dates around South and South West Asia, northern Africa, and Spain and Italy. Dates were introduced into Mexico and California by the Spaniards in 1765 • Dates in Chiangmai was planted early 2000. by mr Khun Sak Lumjuan

  • 94. DATES IN THAILAND Research Information Thai Date Palms Planting – Dig a 50 x 50 centimeter hole and line the bottom with manure or compost. Planting at 8 x 8 meter intervals will get 25 plants per rai. Date palms do not like excessively wet or damp areas. Care and Maintenance – Date palms should be watered approximately every 5-7 days, or according to the dampness of soil. Quality date palms should be given sufficient water at a consistent rate. Fertilizer – The use of manure will result in 1-2 kilograms of produce, twice a year, per tree; together with proper maintenance of soil and eradication of weeds surrounding each plant. Trimming – Aged leaves of date palms tend to get dry and it is recommended that they are cut off to aid in the maintenance of plants, keeping it clean and reducing any possible problems that may arise from pests and insects, although date palms generally have very few problems with pests. Harvesting – Based on the color of the date palm, fruits can be harvested when they have turned a dark yellow. The fruits are oval in shape and grow in bunches or clusters with 4 developmental phases consisting of unripe, mature, ripe, and dried, with the entire 4 periods from flowering to harvesting lasting between 7-8 months.
  • 95. DATES IN THAILAND Storage – Ripe date palms stored at 8 degrees Celsius can be kept for 1 year. Pollination In collecting male pollen, male plants flower before female plants and can be noticed when the blossom or spedix begins to protrude. When the blossom breaks open, within will be the flower with jagged petals. Cover the flower with a plastic bag and shake, the pollen will disperse inside the bag. Remove excess air within the bag, close and seal the bag and refrigerate.
  • 96. DATES IN THAILAND First Date Palms developed for fresh consumption, made possible in Thailand . Date palms are one of the many plants in the diverse palm family, originally found in the middle-eastern regions of Northern Africa, both as single trunks and clusters. The trunks grow to about 30 meters height with circumferences of between 30 – 50 cm. Flower clusters sprout from the base of leaves, with each trunk consisting of approximately 40 – 60 leave stems. The leaves can measure up to 30 – 50 centimeters and are shaped much like feathers while subsidiary leaves sprout in all directions. Date palms are commonly bred through the planting of seeds or shoots, producing rather slow developments. Thai date palms are often planted for gardening and ornamental purposes, with spade-shaped fruits of about 2 – 4 centimeters. Ripe date palms mature from yellow to an orange colour and while edible, are not commonly consumed as the fruits are small and astringentin taste. The fruits distributed in department stores are preserved or processed date palms with an extremely sweet taste, often imported from abroad, with high prices of approximately 500 – 600 baht per kilogram, highest in quality being imported from Israel. Khun Sak Lumjuan the agriculturalist and owner of “Date Farm” farm, located in Thailand, briefly outlined that after graduating as the 36th class from Maejo University and beginning his career in retail as the owner of a distribution outlet of agricultural tools, he began to think that date palms, commonly grown for ornamental purposes, should also be freshly consumed or processed as done abroad. With that thought, he began planting date palms, starting with 30 trees, planted in plots with a distance of 8 x 8 meters.
  • 97. DATES IN Receiving advice from Professor Nutthawut Pasayawan , the Director of the Office of Biotechnological THAILAND Research and Development within the Department of Agriculture. Professor Pasayawan provided guidelines on new breeding methods that would aid in the pollination of the female flower by placing the male pollen inside a plastic bag and refrigerating it until the female flower has fully matured before covering the female flower with the plastic bag in which the male pollen has been stored. This process aids in the production of numerous date palm fruits which. When fully mature , can be used for further breeding, gaining ideal breeding plants to be used for phase 2. Date palms planted in phase 2 produce fruits that have various beneficial qualities and are easy to plant, much like coconuts. To enable rapid development, the plot in which the date palm is to be planted should be lined with manure and compost or organic fertilizers, avoiding humid and soggy areas, and providing a moderate amount of water with only a slight increase during periods of drought. The leaves of these date palm trees are of a whiter colour than ornamental date palms and when positioned in direct sunlight or light, the leave will turn an illuminated white. In comparison to the planting of date palms abroad, the total amount of time from planting to fruition is 3 years , whereas elsewhere it is said to take up to 7 years. Aside from the ability to provide fruits 2 times annually , there have been no recorded instances of infestations of pests or diseases. The first harvest is towards the end of January while the second harvest is in early July, whereas date palms planted abroad can only be harvested once a year.
  • 98. DATES IN THAILAND The date palms are produced in large quantities with large fruits, lots of flesh, and small seeds . When mature, the fruits turn a dark yellow and can be consumed, once the flesh is soft and crisp, without removing the skin. Ripe date palms turn brown and experience an increase in sweetness, measured at approximately 17-20 Brix. If stored at around 8 degrees Celsius, the fruits can be kept for up to 1 year without being preserved. Aside from being able to freshly consume date palms, these fruits also contain qualities that aid in the reduction of thirst and dehydration, as well as the reduction of phlegm. Current developments have been coordinated with the Department of Agriculture to certify this date palm as a species and as an organic plant species that contains no chemicals and pesticides, in hopes that the stability and characteristics of this species may enable further reproduction through means of tissue cultivation.

  • 100. Date nutritional value With the present uncertainty in the world food supply and the expected increase in demand, the date palm could be a good source of food of high nutritional value. In fact, date fruit is rich in nutrients, and due to its dietetic values it has always been held in high esteem by people. Compared to other fruits and foods (apricot: 520 calories/kg; banana: 970 calories/kg; orange: 480 calories/kg; cooked rice: 1,800 calories/kg; wheat bread: 2,295 calories/kg; meat (without fat): 2,245 calories/kg, dates give more than 3,000 calories per kilogram. The date fruit consists of 70 % carbohydrates (mostly sugars), making it one of the most nourishing natural foods available to man. The water content is between 15 to 30 % depending on the variety and on the maturity stage of the fruit. In most varieties, the sugar content of a date fruit is almost entirely of the inverted form (namely glucose and fructose), important for persons who cannot tolerate sucrose The invert sugar in dates is immediately absorbed by the human body without being subjected to the digestion that ordinary sugar undergoes. The flesh of dates contains 60 to 65 % sugar, about 2.5 % fibre, 2 % protein and less than 2 % each of fat, minerals, and pectin substances. Date fruits are also a good source of iron, potassium and calcium, with a very low sodium and fat content. In addition, moderate quantities of chlorine, phosphorous, copper, magnesium, silicon and sulphur are also found in the date fruit
  • 101. Date fruit is called a mine in itself because it is very rich in minerals. Its phosphorous content is similar to that found in the same quantity of apricots, pears and grapes put together. • Its high content of magnesium (±600 mg/1kg of dates) could also be very beneficial. Date consumers in Saharan areas are known to have the lowest rate of cancer diseases, a fact attributed to the magnesium found in dates. • With only 1 mg of sodium per 100 g , dates are good food for those on a low sodium diet. The iron content of 3 mg per 100g is almost a third of the Recommended Dietary Allowance for an adult male. Note that fibre, even though it is not a nutrient for humans, is of much value in a diet as an aid to digestion and evacuation. There is ample evidence that for most persons a diet fairly high in fibre is healthier than one low in fibre. • Furthermore, dates are a good source of vitamins A, B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), and B7 (nicotinic acid also called niacin). The following contents per kilogram are an average for all date varieties: vitamin A, 484 international units; B1, 0.77 milligram (mg); B2, 0.84 mg; and B7, 18.9 mg. • According to Genske and Weers, (1973), one kilogram of the flesh of ripe Deglet Noor dates contains the following: water (220g), sugar (730g; 2740 calories), proteins (22g), Fats (2g) and minerals (19g,) K 6480mg), P (630mg), Ca (590mg), Mg (580mg), Fe (30mg) and Na (10mg)), vitamin A (500 units), vitamin B1 (0.9mg), vitamin B2 (1mg) and vitamin B7 (22mg).
  • 102. Traditional medicinal uses • Dates have a high tannin content and are used medicinally as a detersive (having cleansing power) and astringent in intestinal troubles.[citation needed] As an infusion, decoction, syrup, or paste, dates may be administered for sore throat, colds, bronchial catarrh, and taken to relieve fever and a number of other complaints.[citation needed] One traditional belief is that it can counteract alcohol intoxication. The seed powder is also used in some traditional medicines. • A gum that exudes from the wounded trunk is employed in India for treating diarrhea and genito-urinary ailments.[citation needed] The roots are used against toothache. The pollen yields an estrogenic principle, estrone, and has a gonadotropic effect on young rats.
  • 103. Food uses • Dry or soft dates are eaten out-of-hand, or may be pitted and stuffed with fillings such as almonds , walnuts, candied orange and lemon peel, tahini, marzipan or cream cheese. Pitted dates are also referred to as stoned dates. Dates can also be chopped and used in a range of sweet and savory dishes, from tajines (tagines) in Morocco to puddings, ka'ak (types of Arab cookies) and other dessert items. Dates are also processed into cubes, paste called "'ajwa", spread, date syrup or " honey" called "dibs" or "rub" in Libya, powder (date sugar), vinegar or alcohol. Recent innovations include chocolate-covered dates and products such as sparkling date juice, used in some Islamic countries as a non-alcoholic version of champagne, for special occasions and religious times such as Ramadan. • Dates can also be dehydrated, ground and mixed with grain to form a nutritious stockfeed. Dried dates are fed to camels, horses and dogs in the Sahara. In northern Nigeria, dates and peppers added to the native beer are believed to make it less intoxicating. • Young date leaves are cooked and eaten as a vegetable, as is the terminal bud or heart, though its removal kills the palm. The finely ground seeds are mixed with flour to make bread in times of scarcity. The flowers of the date palm are also edible. Traditionally the female flowers are the most available for sale and weigh 300–400 grams. The flower buds are used in salad or ground with dried fish to make a condiment for bread.
  • 104. Food uses • According to a study by Al-Shahib and Marshall, in many ways, "dates may be considered as an almost ideal food, providing a wide range of essential nutrients and potential health benefits." The sugar content of ripe dates is about 80%; the remainder consists of protein, fiber, and trace elements including boron, cobalt, copper, fluorine, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and zinc[2] • In India and Pakistan, North Africa, Ghana, and Côte d'Ivoire, date palms are tapped for the sweet sap, which is converted into palm sugar (known as jaggery or gur), molasses or alcoholic beverages. In North Africa the sap obtained from tapping palm trees is known as lāgbī (pronounced [laːɡ biː ]). If left for a sufficient period of time (typically hours, depending on the temperature) lāgbī easily becomes an alcoholic drink. Special skill is required when tapping the palm tree so that it does not die. • In Southeast Spain (where a large date plantation exists including UNESCO protected Palmeral of Elche) dates (usually pitted with fried almond) are served wrapped in bacon and shallow fried.
  • 105. Other uses of the plant 1) Date seeds are soaked and ground up for animal feed. Their oil is suitable for use in soap and cosmetics. They can also be processed chemically as a source of oxalic acid. The seeds are also burned to make charcoal for silversmiths, and can be strung in necklaces. Date seeds are also ground and used in the manner of coffee beans, or as an additive to coffee. 2) Stripped fruit clusters are used as brooms. In Pakistan, a viscous, thick syrup made from the ripe fruits is used as a coating for leather bags and pipes to prevent leaking. Date palm sap is used to make palm syrup and numerous edible products derived from the syrup. 3) Date palm leaves are used for Palm Sunday in the Christian religion. In North Africa, they are commonly used for making huts. Mature leaves are also made into mats, screens, baskets and fans. Processed leaves can be used for insulating board. Dried leaf petioles are a source of cellulose pulp, used for walking sticks, brooms, fishing floats and fuel. Leaf sheaths are prized for their scent, and fibre from them is also used for rope, coarse cloth, and large hats. 4) Date palm wood is used for posts and rafters for huts; it is lighter than coconut and not very durable. It is also used for construction such as bridges and aqueducts, and parts of dhows. Leftover wood is burnt for fuel.
