Breakdancing, also called b-boying or breaking, is a street dance developed by African American and Latino youth in New York City that consists of four elements: toprock, downrock, power moves, and freezes. Practitioners of this style, called b-boys, b-girls, or breakers, often compete against each other or in crews in breakdancing battles and use hip-hop music remixed to extend the musical breaks for their dances. While sometimes called "breakdance," the original terms preferred by pioneers of the dance form are "b-boying" and "breaking."
