- 2. ABSTRACT: SAMBA, the mostfamous carnival of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. It is the rich display of Brazilian culture and heritage. Samba is a weeklong gala consisting of dancing,musical and fun-filled events. Samba Dance is a kind of art. Samba, the festival of festivals dates back to 1723, filled with night-long partying,drinking,vibrant costumes and glittering business. The Schools of Samba in Rio de Janeiro prepare their dancers for the whole year and finally present a magnificent show at the Carnival parade with their flaunting Samba dance steps.Samba dance is a set of dances than a single form of dance. Personally, I feel that the Samba music is what makes the dance steps. There are a various forms of dancing this rhythmic dance. Samba Dance consists of many steps and I have seen so many steps and I didn’t restrict at only one. The garment collection falling in category of Haute Couture is constructed sheer fineness, sleek yet wild cutline’sis known for its understated, tailored and lavish style.The high-standing collar is made in a striking pattern of different colors.The garments give the glamorous and glaze look. The collection will exhibit the diamantes,feathers all the shimmery stuff and stones and fluorescent furs and costumes in a variety of styles.The headpieces are also used in collection. The monumental Samba Dance that reflects rhythmic and cultural enriched traditions of Brazil are main influence on cuts of garments. The elegant yet wild movement of dance isruling the Haute-ness of costumes. The old Brazilian ball-room dance, full of energy and fast beats lead by hip hop, pop music will rule the costume’s styles, giving them bright, “get-up and dance” feeling. The rich and glitter enriched collection is a total display of Brazilian’s lustrous yet culturally historic Samba Festival.
- 3. LITERATURE REVIEW: CARNIVAL: The wordcarnival is derived from the Italian Carne Vale or Carnival. Its Italian means goodbye to flesh or farewell to meat, which is not eat up during the period of Lent. However, it is believed that in preparation for Lent, the four days to prepare the way to Ash Wednesday becomes a feasting period with dancing and partying before the more peaceful season between Ash Wednesday and Easter. Hence preceding to the 46 days of Lent, Carnival is seen as an opportunity to hold a large celebration before the fasting season. Carnivals are celebrated in many countries but the one in Brazil is most famous. The most famous carnival is that of Rio de Janeiro. The Capital city of Rio de Janeiro is meaningful in the history of carnival. From the 1950's to 1960's, Brazil carnival balls and partying develop into the now full blown rarer show that it similar today. There were further meaningful developments in the history of carnival, which over time elements derived from Native American and African cultures, (which are more dominant in carnivals in Brazil northeast today). One such element being the Samba, which is

The next histrionic chapter in the history of Brazil carnival occurred during the very liberating 1960's, which shaped carnivals in Brazil into what it is today. It is conclude that in excess of a quarter of a million tourists visit for carnival Brazil each year. It is little wonder, when you consider that the Brazilian carnival is known worldwide and attract carnival lovers of every age, gender and religion from both within and outside Brazil. The Carnival of Brazil is an annual festival held forty days before Easter. On certain days of Lent, Roman Catholics and some other Christians traditionally refrained from the feeding of meat and poultry, hence the term "carnival," from carnelevare, "to remove (exactly, "raise") meat. Carnival celebrations are believed to have roots in the pagan festival of Saturnalia, which, adapted to Christianity, became a farewell to bad things in a season of religious discipline to practice regret and prepare for Christ's death and rebirth. Rhythm, participation, and costumes vary from one region of Brazil to another. In the southeastern cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, huge organized parades are led by samba schools. Those official parades are meant to be watched by the public, while minor parades ("blocos") agreeing public participation can be found in other cities. The northeastern cities of Salvador have organized groups parading through streets, and public cooperates directly with them. This carnival is heavily influenced by African- Brazilian culture. The country stops completely for almost a week and events are strong, day and night, mainly in beach cities. Another city which is famous for its Carnival in Brazil is Salvador de Bahia. INTERESTING FACTS ON THE RIO CARNIVAL: The two festivals are quite different from one another, with our own Carnival life that allows the people much more freedom on the streets. 1. The carnival is a four-day party held 40 days before Easter. 2. It started yesterday and ends on 'Fat Tuesday', the day before the start of Lent, Ash Wednesday. 3. February is the hottest month of the year in Rio and the city is at its sparkling. 4. The origins of the carnival can be drawn back to the Romans and Greeks who celebrated the coming of spring with parties.
- 5. 5. These traditionswere carried over to the New World with Portuguese settlers in the 1700s. 6. Their 'Entrudo' festival saw revelers throwing water, limes, mud and even food at each other. 7. Brazil's carnival changed over time with the addition of masquerade balls and then big street parades with groups of people playing music and dancing. 8. Today, carnival takes place in the city's streets, bars and clubs. 9. Hundreds of street bands, singers and orchestras will entertain party largely with samba music. 10. The carnival highlight however is the Samba Parade. 11. Held in the purpose-built Sambadromo, the schools are judged on their elaborate floats, costumes, dancing and music. 12. - 6. SAMBA DANCE: Samba Origins: Sambais one of the truest Brazilian features. If you talk about samba, you talk about Brazil. Like Brazil itself, samba is the result of the contact of many different influences and blends. The main samba roots were initially the African rhythms BATUQUE and LUNDU. Played mainly with drums and clapping the hands. Later, other elements from European rhythms were combined through the use of new instruments like the clarinet, flute and guitar. Europe + Africa in Brazil After being discovered Brazil became a Portuguese colony and most of its naturalpeopleleft with the European jobs. During its 300 grand years, Brazil was made into a large producer of sugar cane. The hugeaddition of land was working with slaves brought from Africa to work in the sugar cane farms, while the Portuguese farmers formed a small leadingsuperiority. In Africa, many people were attacked and destroyed and their people sent to Brazil to work as slaves in the sugar production. From these sad years of freedomBrazil inborn its strong link to the African culture in many ways: in the food, in the music, in the people features and worships. In some regions of Brazil, the black African culture is celebrated as one of the most important influences in the Brazilian history and culture. The State of Bahia is the strongest focus of the African heritage. Where slaves were injured for many periods before the Ending Law of 1888. Mixing the Brazilian characteristic happiness in life.The African freedom mix together with the celebration for Freedom that came with the Ending law. As a result of so many mixtures the difficult structure of the BRAZILIAN society was formed. Where SAMBA was born as an expression of differences. It has been performed as a street dance at carnival the pre-Lenten celebration for almost 100 years. Many types of the Samba are danced at the local carnival in Rio. The samba dance history is a rich cultural one. Brazil in the 19th century, samba dances are done to samba music, and like there are many types of samba music and there are many types of samba dances. Samba music is most often in 2/4 time. However, there are three steps so it often feels like one is dancing in 3/4 time instead of 2/4 time. The rhythm is fast and full of energy, so the music encourages people to really get up and dance. Whether one gets up to do a solo samba or to dance a samba with a partner.The music will move you to the dance floor or into the street such as during a Carnival celebration. While samba has become a popular ballroom dance as well.Samba is originally a Latin dance. The original samba is very different from the ballroom style dance which has been named samba. Of course the ballroom style dance has close connections to the original samba. However Rio de Janeiro who sees a ballroom competition with the sound off will possibly not know a samba as what they would call a samba.
- 8. The ballroom Sambaor Carioca Samba is derived from the rural "Rocking Samba" and has been known for many years. The Carioca is a small river that runs through Rio de - Janiero. Hence the name Carioca refers to the people of Rio. Today Samba is still very popular in Rio. During carnival time there are "schools of Samba" involving thousands of costumed dancers presenting a national theme based on music of Brazil and Rio. Before 1914 it was famous under a Brazilian name "Maxixe". As early as 1923 an international meeting of professors of dancing took note of the increase of the Samba's popularity mostly in France. A French dance book published by Paul Boucher in 1928 included Samba instructions. The dance was introduced to United States movie audiences in 1933 when Fred Astaire and Dolores Del Rio danced the Carioca in Flying Down to Rio and some years later, Carmen Miranda danced the Samba in That Night in Rio. A Samba exhibition was given at the November 1938 meeting of the New York Society of Teachers of Dancing. Over-all interest in the Samba was inspired at the 1939 in New York, where Samba music was played at the Brazilian building. A few years later the Brazilian writerAryBarros wrote the classic Samba, "Brazil" which quickly became a success and in 1944 he went to Hollywood to write the score for the musical Brazil. The Samba is now popular ballroom dance limited pretty, too much experienced ballroom dancers because of its speed. The quote was taken from an article published in 1838 and written by Miguel do Sacramento Lopes Gama. Lopes like many other people of the upper class that likes new type of music.
