The document discusses synchronous travelogues, an emergent form of online behavior where individuals share their travel experiences in real-time across multiple social media platforms. It has become democratized compared to traditional travelogues which were often written, printed, and shared after the fact. The research examines synchronous travelogues at the Notting Hill Carnival to understand how technology and social interactions influence each other. Findings suggest travelogues now facilitate instant sharing and responses between travelers and audiences, blurring boundaries.

Walking tours are a great way to engage visitors in the history of your Main Street. In fact, Portland, Seattle and Pendleton all conduct walking tours so popular they have become tourist attractions on their own! Successful tours have a strong educational component but are also
entertaining, and fun. Tour developers use stories and techniques that “stick” and train their guides in ways that continually engage the audience. This session will examine storytelling and improvisational methods to help make your walking tour a five-star tourist draw.
Tourists and citizens have limited knowledge about Canterbury. The city does not have efficient means of offering cultural and architectural information to the tourists, also failing to engage young and elder citizens into the activities happening in town, allowing a decreasing level of human interactions.
Part of the MuseWeb Foundation’s larger "Be Here" initiative, "Be Here: Main Street" is partnership with the Smithsonian Institution and its Museum on Main Street program, which brings Smithsonian traveling exhibitions to small towns across the United States and its territories. The goals of "Be Here: Main Street" are not only to collect rich stories about America’s towns and waterways but also to connect people, businesses, communities, and cultural institutions through storytelling.

• multi-faceted, synchronous, interventions, bricolage, varied content,
fragmented (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Foursquare)
7. Findings
• Motivations of Travelogue writers:
• Travel experience enhanced through virtual conspicuous
consumption or through altruism/sharing.
• Audience vicarious consumption (as of old), but with the
ability to interact and instantly demonstrate appreciation,
prior knowledge or suggest activities
8. Synchronous Travelogue
• Virtual transmedia souvenir created by traveler/performer
and audience
• Blurs performer/audience boundaries
• Linked multiple networks and platforms
(Twitter/Facebook/Instagram/Flikr/Pinterest/You Tube/Blog)
• Instant sharing/responses

• Facilitated by technology
– “Free” Social networks
– Cheap online storage

15. Summary
• Travelogues extend the travel experience spatially and
temporally
• HOWEVER, Travel information was mediated by influential
broadcasters
• Now democratised
• No curator or filter
• Immediacy without mediation
16. Implications
• Need for power, communications infrastructure / mobile
broadband to facilitate synchronicity
• Tourism authorities and providers to supply readymade
narratives (photo opps, local colour, music, culture)
• Monitor networks to identify emergent themes and
legitimize/amplify them
