Building: HMB N344E
Class: SWK 308.01 (Human Behavior and the Social Environment II)
Date: 4/18/16, Monday, 2:00 – 3:20
Note-Taker: Susie Harvey
Announcements:
*Based on what we discussed, your final team presentations are due in class on
April 25th
. They must be a minimum of 20 minutes long and include 3
discussionquestions. You must develop these questions as it relates to your group
experiences – Deaf-REACH, social media, and workshop. On May 2nd
, the last
day of class, we will have a wrap-up/party day. I will bring Japanese desserts
and tea to celebrate.
*The schedule has been modified becauseof the pre- and post-testyou should
receive about Social Work Knowledge by guest speaker, David Reeker, from the
Office of Development. We’ll see how this goes.
Today’s Events:
(*Class discussionof internships, e.g. personal experiences*)
(*Passing out of handout: GrantProposal Checklist*)
(*Introduction to PPT – Grants:Finding out aboutgrants?, Government,
foundation and business/corporategrants [e.g. World Bank, The Nippon
Foundation], Whatkinds of grants?, Program, research, training, planning,
technicalassistanceproposals,servicescontract (collaboration between
agencies), Pre-application phase [identify and contactpotential sources*)
(*Passing out of handouts: Program Development chart and Program Action –
Logic Model chart*)
T: The first blue arrow that you see (Situation and Priorities) is where you
include your assessment, community needs and data from the database – the results
from your Deaf-REACH interviews for example. From there, your inputs include
your investments (e.g. resources), outputs (activities and participation of what you
do and whom you reach out to), and finally the outcomes and impact (clear short-
term, medium-term and long-term goals). This whole process will be affected by
assumptions (about staff, environment) and external factors. Include arrows on
your chart so the factors of your plan are interrelated with one another. This also
demonstrates the theory of change.
T: For the next 10 minutes, I want you all to group up in your teams and
brainstorm ideas for a program of action using the charts I provided for you. Relate
your ideas to your projects: Deaf-REACH, social media and workshop.
(*Group activity and discussion – Program of Action*)
Wrap-Up:
*I hope you understand the importance and organization of the Logic Model.
Assumptions and External factors can be confusing. Assumptions refer to personal
issues, such as funding and communication issues. External factors refer to
potential barriers in the environment, such as transportation costs and if a particular
place is in a rural farmland and lacks resources.
*The Theory of Change is critical in discussing programs and agendas that relate
to international development. We will discuss more about this in our last class on
May 2nd.
*This Wednesday (the 20th) will be spent on group work to prepare for your
presentations. See you next Monday!
