4. Management and operation of landfills
 Landfill Bavel (34 ha, started in 1968 – now closed, 100% Grontmij).
 Landfills Stainkoeln I + II (13 + 18 ha, started in 1980, PPP with City of
Groningen).
 2 open composting plants (100%), 1 tunnel composting (50%, OGAR).
 Special water treatment facility (leachate).
 Capping and after care of 4 landfills.

5. Landfilling: still a necessary practice
 Landfilling forms the basis of every waste management strategy.
 Also in countries that have focused on developing contemporary waste treatment
systems, there will be a continuous need for landfill capacity.
 Compared to other disposal options, properly constructed and operated landfill
sites offer a safe disposal route for municipal solid waste, typically at the lowest
cost.
 In India, it is important to gain broad political, scientific and social consensus on
this need, and to define measures needed to ensure progressive development of
standards.
