which is being built by Masdar, a subsidiary of Mubadala Development Company, with the majority of seed

and engineering and environmental consultancy Mott MacDonald, the city will rely entirely on solar energy and
other renewable energy sources, with a zero waste ecology. It initially aimed to be a sustainable zero-carbon carfree
city. . This article is a case study about “Masdar City,” a planned carbon-neutral town in Abu Dhabi. The
article describes the key characteristics of Masdar City.
On 22nd July 2009, I welcomed the opportunity to share my perspective as an experienced town planner and project manager to the Ford Strategic Design Group in London and offer insight into the California development process. The presentation’s purpose was to provide an overview of town planning and highlight key elements of environmental analysis for new development master plans and regeneration projects relevant to transport, namely, the automobile. It included a featured a sustainable transportation case study on the Orange County Great Park and Great Park Neighborhoods, a 4,700-acre regeneration project in Irvine, California (40 miles south of Los Angeles, California). Ending with recommendations for Ford to collaborate with emerging developments, I offered California-based opportunities that promote a reduction in vehicle miles traveled (VMT) and support zero-carbon emission climate change strategies, while facilitating community mobility.

ABSTRACT: For decades the traditional approach for solving mobility and transportation challenges has been based on the idea of creating new road or rail infrastructures. Thanks to the impressive enhancement of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technologies, in the last years this approach is going into the direction of rather improving the efficiency of how available transportation infrastructure is used. New digital infrastructures allow all mobility actors (vehicles, pedestrians, sensors, traffic management centers) to cooperate together to achieve the ambitious goal of improving mobility, enhancing safety, reducing congestion and environmental impacts. But how can we achieve this and ensure that public and private actors efficiently work together? In South Tyrol we have tried to give an answer to these challenges through the implementation of an open data hub, which enables the real-time data / information exchange among all interested parties and fosters the multiplication of development of research & innovation projects between local companies, research centers and public organizations. After years of implementation, the Open Data Hub South Tyrol is now creating the premises for a new historical phase for mobility in the region, with concepts like Mobility-as-a-Service or environmental traffic management that are finally moving from research to deployment.
BIO: Roberto Cavaliere is an ITS Project Manager at NOI Techpark Südtirol / Alto Adige, a public-owned organization in the Italian alpine region of South Tyrol coordinating the NOI Tech Park and with the mission to drive and foster research & innovation in the region. Roberto is the reference person in NOI for all initiatives in the field of ITS and smart mobility and in the last 10 years has coordinated a relevant number of EU-funded projects in this field. His main interests cover cooperative systems, autonomous driving, ITS for the environment, mobility-as-a-service and sharing mobility, road weather information systems (RWIS).

After a close study of the sun and shadows, the shape and orientation of the building are

This building faces south toward a park, so it can capture maximum sunlight, and its
irregular form allows more daylight to reach the street.
Gardens circle the base, contributing to the quality of life at street level.

Solar power
The southern façade, made of about 100,000 square feet of photovoltaic panels that convert

needs.
Costing at least 20 cents per kilowatt-hour—several times as much as coal or natural gas—
solar PV is expensive today.
But the trends are good: Solar is getting cheaper, and the relative economics will improve as
more states and countries regulate the production of greenhouse gases
