Some Strategies to Support Equity and
Inclusion
• Listening
• Checking in
• Advocacy
• Mentoring
• Bystander intervention
• Policy/syllabi
• Effective code of conduct
• Sense of belonging
How Do We Increase DEI in the
Geosciences?
Activity
1. Write one or two types of DEI initiatives that are lacking
in your program.
2. Write one or two types of DEI initiatives that are strong
in your program.
3. Discuss a couple of reasons that make the initiative (in #
2) strong.
4. How do you plan to actively facilitate DEI in your
program?
5. Are there strategies you would like to try or adopt?
(10 mins)
Checking our Biases
• What biases do we bring into the classroom?
• Defining issues & how they impact student
learning and performance
• What strategies might we employ to make our
classrooms more inclusive?
Do you know your biases? Show of hands
(take a moment to write down one or two ways that you are biased)
Types of Biases & Assumptions
•Stereotype threat
•Imposter syndrome
•Implicit bias
•Microaggressions
•White privilege
Take a moment to think about what each of these
mean to you and share your thoughts with the group
What You Can Do in Your Classroom to
Mitigate Some Forms of Bias
• Share your pronouns
• Make room for student-driven activities
• Practice self affirmations
(e.g. give students an opportunity reflect on what they are very
good at)
• Reinforce students’ science identity
(e.g. refer to your students as scientists, use diverse role models)
• Practice self-reflection during all interactions w/
students
(e.g. being careful about reinforcing offensive jokes from
students who may not know better…)
How to Create a Community to
Support Your DEI Efforts
• Stay in touch with your workshop cohort
• Participate in other NAGT and DEI activities at
meetings/conferences
• Identify and work with allies
• Request trainings for DEI (e.g. with ADVANCEGeo)
• Unlearning Racism (e.g. with URGEoscience)
• Attend CHANGE (Cultivating cHampions and Allies
Navigating Geoscience Equity) workshop series
• Develop group Code of Conduct for class, lab, etc.
