- Staff at Kingston University provided feedback from a learning technologies review calling for more flexibility and openness in their virtual learning environment (VLE), including the ability to publicly share course modules. - The university is exploring ways to provide a more open infrastructure, including directly uploading staff and student content to the VLE content system, implementing a university metadata schema, and federating searches across systems. - Trials were conducted importing and exporting content packaged in the IMS Common Cartridge standard between the Blackboard and Moodle VLEs, with some challenges around resource navigation and file naming conventions.

They implemented a module that retrieves assignment files and metadata from Moodle and generates a METS package to send to the DSpace repository using the SWORD protocol. This allows assignments to be seamlessly published to the repository without additional manual work. The integration reduces duplication of resources across systems and provides a unified way to access course content and student work.
Open educational resources (OER): why they matter
OER refers to open educational resources which include full courses, course materials, and other learning content that can be freely accessed and used online. MIT's OpenCourseWare initiative is an example of an institutional OER program that makes course materials from over 1,900 courses freely available on the web. Educators use OER in a variety of ways like reusing content, adapting course syllabi, and combining OER materials with other resources. There are benefits to creating OER like lowering costs for students and fostering pedagogical innovation through customizable learning materials.
Using Semantic Analysis for Content Alignment & Gap Analysis
In the LMS or CMS environment, content management frequently translates into single-purpose allocation of content resources, with cataloging and meta tagging being a haphazard affair. This results in potential duplication of content and significant time loss associated with asset retrieval for incorporation into new curricula. Because content is created with the notion that all contributors have knowledge of the underlying taxonomies or common vernacular that information is based upon, it is difficult for organizations to survey their content universe for existing objects that can be incorporated into emerging workflows or to assess relationships between content across disciplines.

This “open courseware” builds upon the lessons learned in openly publishing course materials through OpenCourseWares (including MIT), as well as the opportunities raised by the confluence of the growing interest in open educational resources (OERs) coupled with declining university budgets. Through Project Greenfield we aim to build upon selected course materials published by MIT OpenCourseWare and transform them into “full courses” including support for formative assessment, the addition of existing, illustrative and interactive OERs.
