  1. As one of Modeshift’s partners, we already helping many of their members create effective interventions in the form of maps. We’re all used to using maps to plan how and when we travel – so it’s natural that they can be used to promote modal shift. In fact, they play a vital part in presenting people with the accurate information they need to make informed choices.
  2. Of the organizations presenting here today, we are working with the vast majority of them, helping them promote active and sustainable travel to their staff or end users. All of these organizations are using site-specific mapping to encourage modal shift.
  3. I’m betting that most of you have used a map today, and if you haven’t, it’s likely that you will before the end of the day. Maps come in many shapes and forms – and as we spend more of our lives online, we’re using maps more than ever.
  4. Maps in their most obvious form are geographical – we could quickly recognize a country, city or area just by it’s outline. Some of us will have watched a weather report on TV this morning, or checked the weather online… and we can quickly grasp the information we need just by looking at the map. Often we wouldn’t have to listen to the presenter or read the weather report in detail.
  5. Most of us would have checked where today’s venue was in advance… and how we would travel here. And we might have double-checked this morning… which was the best route from the station, how long would it take.
  6. Even seemingly simply maps can quickly convey a wealth of information. This simple linear map tells us where we are and how long it will take to reach our destination, as well as where the rail interchanges are.
  7. Why are maps effective? Maps are all around us, which means people are familiar with using them. Arguments become a lot more persuasive when you add ‘where’ to the ‘what’ and the ‘why’. Visuals can be compelling – the story that maps envisage help you change peoples minds.
  8. Many of our clients use mapping to promote sustainable travel, using simple visuals like isochrones to clearly show walking or cycling distances to a site, and photographs of landmarks to help with orientation.
  9. As well as maps showing travel to a site, we’re often asked to produce lunchtime walk maps, encouraging staff to be active during the day.
  10. Some of our clients simply don’t have enough parking for all of their staff and for them, mapping plays a vital part in promoting public transport and car sharing schemes.
  11. All of the maps are backed up with information about the various travel choices and the benefits of active travel.
  12. Our clients are using mapping as a quick and cost-effective way of introducing active and sustainable travel. They’re using a map to present a number of complex messages in a clear and legible way.
  13. But some of our clients wanted to promote active travel at multiple sites, sometimes spread across a wide geographic area. So, we created a portal that would enable users to produce their own leaflets. The portal is easy to use and it takes just a few minutes to create a site-specific leaflet for any site.
  14. The templates within the portal include client branding and a space on the front cover for the site name or a logo, and space on the back cover to include some additional site-specific information. This template is combined with open source mapping and allows the user to personalize the map with isochrones, icons and walking routes or cycling routes.
  15. The Make Your Own Map portal is now being used by over 25 organizations across the UK, enabling them to create cost-effective travel plans for a large number of sites.
  16. Persuading people to leave the car at home, at least some of the time, is about providing accurate information in an easy-to-understand and accessible format. But what happens once you’ve won hearts and minds? By using digital displays to provide real-time or up-to-date travel information, you can enable people to continue making considered choices.
  17. Pindar Creative is now a reseller of Papercast e-paper displays. Available in a range of formats and currently being trialed by TfL, digital travel information will be seen increasingly at airports, universities, hospitals and workplaces, as well as on street.
  18. I’ve largely focused on our mapping today because I believe it’s one of the most effective interventions (or quick wins) you can put in place, but we do lots of other things that help make active and sustainable travel a real choice.
  19. Effective mapping is all about legibility, so however you’re getting your message across, understand your market and stay focused on the desired outcome.
