Guinea-Bissau is a West African country with a population of over 1.5 million people from various ethnic groups. Super Mama Djombo was a influential musical group formed in the 1960s that used their music to support the independence movement through the 1970s. Their blend of styles reflected the political and cultural changes in Guinea-Bissau after gaining independence in 1974. Though the band broke up in the 1980s due to government persecution, their music continued to impact Guinea-Bissau culture and inspire new generations of musicians.
