A super cell thunderstorm is a large, long-lasting storm characterized by a single rotating updraft column. It forms when cold air sits above warm, humid air in conditions with strong wind shear, causing the updraft to begin rotating horizontally. This rotating column, called a mesocyclone, is capable of producing severe weather such as tornadoes, large hail, and strong winds that can cause significant damage.
