RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE
Guard Trainer Sep2002 to present
Sydney Trains
This training role makes me responsible for imparting instructions to Trainee Guards
and Drivers both class rooms based and onboard revenue services. This is done in
accordance within the framework laid out by Sydney Trains. I am also responsible for
the safety of any other employee(s) placed under my care.
Another requirement of this role is to provide information upon request to assist all
Guards in the correct execution of their duties and provide coaching support when
required. This involves requests in writing and over the telephone at any time while
the guards are performing their duty. Due to the intensive involvement in all aspects
of training I am always learning new things, and able to retain this newly acquired
knowledge and apply while training at all times.
I am also conducting assessments of Guards and Trainee Drivers performance and
writing reports to certify them for various competencies in accordance with the
workplace standards. Providing feedback to the management is an integral role of
this position and most of it is done in writing by attesting the trainees log book.
In addition to this I am also involved in the process of developing Training strategies
in liaison with the Training Standards Unit, regarding training programs, organising
resources and staff for training exercises and other administrative work like
designing lessons to suit the individual needs of trainees in special circumstances.
This has developed my exceptional planning and organising skills to a high level.
My training role requires me to impart training in many subjects like Train Radio and
Communication protocols, Customer Service, Safeworking, Electrical Safety
Awareness, Train Operations, Rostering principles, Division and Amalgamation of
Railcars, Shunting, Fault Finding, Signal Recognition, Road Knowledge, Etc.
3
While imparting onboard training I continually monitor the trainee for the safe
management of the operation of trains. Access the needs and level of competency of
the trainee and help them accordingly.

I was seconded to Australian Rail Training, Petersham the training facility of State
Rail Authority of NSW to train Rail Employees. I delivered Guard Training to new
train crews and Safety Refresher Training to Train Crews including Drivers, Station
Staff, Signallers & Train Controllers. Again my excellent learning skills and sound
communication skills helped me build a healthy rapport with my trainees. I used the
PC to prepare my lesson plans and write assessment tasks, other training aids and
enter the training outcomes electronically.
In this role I actively interacted with the relevant staff from Training and Development
division. My work involved planning and organising for the delivery of the lessons in
an easy to understand manner. I was travelling to various training locations and
delivering training during weekends and in shifts. I have also used the Driving

different situations.

onboard announcements, maintaining on time running, communicating with the train
crew assignment officers and network controllers, implementing Special Train
Notices, maintaining records of the journey, and advising the appropriate authority of
any unforeseen circumstances/happenings while enroute.
I also gave directions/information about City Rail Network, products and services,
luggage services, lost property services etc to my customers while on the platform in
addition to my normal duties.

excellent customer skills to manage them onboard. Some of the groups are as
follows.

Compartment to take appropriate action and to exercise my problem solving and
decision making skills. For example attending to passenger disturbance and other
emergencies, assessing and addressing a violent situation, attending and organising
help for a sick passenger, assisting elderly and many more.
Given the extensive exposure to the general public and incidents quite often these
situations require immediate decision making skills and action. At the same time this
must be within the given framework as laid down by the Rail Corp.
