Production
Production is a process of converting raw materials of semi finish goods into finished
goods that have value in the market.
Objectives of Production Planning
 To determine capacity of all manufacturing departments and to plan systematically
coordinated
 To translate orders received from sales department into orders on the works department and to
ensure steady plans of production activities.
 To promote fuller utilization of plants.
 To assist labor towards right and greater earnings.
 To train staff in the effective performance of their duties
Planning
Routing
Scheduling
Dispatching
Follow-up and Expediting
Inspection
ELEMENTS OF PRODUCTION
PLANNING
Types of production system:
There are three types of production system-
I. Progressive Bundle System
II. Unit Production System
III. Modular Production System
Progressive Bundle System
PBS Workflow
 Bundles consist of garment parts needed to complete a specific
operation (e.g an operation bundle for pocket setting might
include shirt fronts and pockets to b stitched together.
 Some firms operate with a standard bundle size, while other vary
bundle sizes acc. to size of pieces in bundle and operation to b
completed.
 Bundles are assembled in the cutting room, where cut parts are
matched up with corresponding parts and bundle tickets.
 Workers (labour) transport and move Bundles of cut parts to
sewing room via trollies.
 Operator scheduled to complete the operation and perform same
operation on all pieces in the bundle, retie the bundle, remove
Bundle ticket and move bundle for next operation.
Advantages of PBS
 Labor of all levels ie unskilled, skilled, semi skilled labors
are involved. Small simple operations.
 Quantity of each operation is checked during every single
operation thus quality is good.
 Due to bundle system, less chance of mixing up of
parts…thus less confusion.
 Bundle tracking is possible, so identifying and solving
problems become easy.
 Effective production control system and Quality control
system.
Dis-advantages of PBS
 Time Consuming due to assembling, moving and un-tieing of
bundles.
 More labor…More labor cost.
 Needs efficient supervisor.
 Labor absentiees can effect production due to incompletion of
contracts.
 Variety of styles and less quantity is not effective in this system.
 Proper planning is required for each style, each batch.
 Improper planning causes labour turnover, poor quality, less
production, etc.

COSTING & BUDGETING
Premises
Utility
Website
Initial launch
Promotions
Recruitment Procedures
Employees & Workers
Product Manufacturing Cost
Training for employees
Transportation
Three costing methods
 Direct costing
 Absorption costing
 Activity based costing (ABC)
DIRECT COSTING
 Considers only the variable costs such as direct labor,
material costs and sales commission to be product
costs
 Non variable costs, both manufacturing and non
manufacturing are treated as time period costs
 Price-cost taken = contribution
 Contribution has to cover non variable costs and
profit
 Advantage:
 Easy to identify the individual styles and their level of
contribution
 Disadvantage:
 Easy to miscalculate the margin and end up in loss
DIRECT COSTING:
ABSORPTION COSTING
 Considers all manufacturing costs, both variable and non
variable as product costs that can be allocated to products
 Overhead is allocated with an application rate which is a
percentage of direct labor cost
 Over head application rate is the ratio of total factory
overhead and total direct labor costs for the factory
 Disadvantage: Arriving at the correct overhead application
rate as it can easily distort the profit potential of a product
ACTIVITY BASED COSTING
 Activities creates costs and those that can be associated
with certain products, customers or suppliers should be
allocated accordingly
 All factory overhead, administrative overhead and any other
resource used in support of a product are first assessed to
activity centers such as design, merchandising, MIS, quality
and distribution
 For example, if a ladies fashion style has taken more time in
designing then designer’s time spent is taken into account
for that style where as a regular shirt for which designer has
not spent anytime will not be considered for costing
HR & COMPLIENCE

  • 61. Three costing methods  Direct costing  Absorption costing  Activity based costing (ABC)
  • 62. DIRECT COSTING  Considers only the variable costs such as direct labor, material costs and sales commission to be product costs  Non variable costs, both manufacturing and non manufacturing are treated as time period costs  Price-cost taken = contribution  Contribution has to cover non variable costs and profit
  • 63.  Advantage:  Easy to identify the individual styles and their level of contribution  Disadvantage:  Easy to miscalculate the margin and end up in loss DIRECT COSTING:
  • 64. ABSORPTION COSTING  Considers all manufacturing costs, both variable and non variable as product costs that can be allocated to products  Overhead is allocated with an application rate which is a percentage of direct labor cost  Over head application rate is the ratio of total factory overhead and total direct labor costs for the factory  Disadvantage: Arriving at the correct overhead application rate as it can easily distort the profit potential of a product
  • 65. ACTIVITY BASED COSTING  Activities creates costs and those that can be associated with certain products, customers or suppliers should be allocated accordingly  All factory overhead, administrative overhead and any other resource used in support of a product are first assessed to activity centers such as design, merchandising, MIS, quality and distribution  For example, if a ladies fashion style has taken more time in designing then designer’s time spent is taken into account for that style where as a regular shirt for which designer has not spent anytime will not be considered for costing
