Peer Leaders

Peer Leadership Qualities
Effective peer leaders often
have good interpersonal
intelligence skills. Being able
to understand how to interact
with others can help facilitate
their interactions in
collaborative group
endeavors. Students with this
strength can also help
students that have greater
intrapersonal intelligence to
become part of the
collaborative group effort.
Establishing Ground Rules
Ground rules help facilitate a
positive and productive
learning environment for all
group members. When rules
are established it sets the
stage for effective peer
leadership. It is important
that each role assigned is
equitable. Students should
feel a sense of responsibility
and dedication to the success
of the overall group effort.

Peer leadership spans across a continuum of learning. Leadership begins with self
leadership which is an intrapersonal skill. Once personal leadership is achieved,
students then begin to branch out into peer leadership. This then enables them to
branch out even further beyond the constructs of the classroom into life skills, people
and public leadership.
