2. Student Spotlight Justin Calhoun Major: Automotive Class Of: 2011 Justin Calhoun is a freshman from Canton, Ill. He is in the automotive program and also runs cross country for the Chargers. He hopes to transfer to a technical institute for a possible engineering career."I came to CSC because they have the best automotive program locally. I want to eventually own my own shop and do customized work, and my instructor, Larry Wright, is very performance-oriented. He is good at giving one-on-one direction and makes you think for yourself," said Calhoun.
3. Student Spotlight Felicia Appell Major: English Class Of: 2010 Felicia is a 2008 graduate of ROWVA High School and is a sophomore at CSC. During her time at CSC, Felicia has been an active member of the TRIO Student Support Services program and plays softball for the Chargers. After graduating from CSC, Felicia plans to transfer to Western Illinois University or Illinois State University to major in English in hopes of becoming a high school English teacher someday.“TRIO has really helped me with academic advising and has really put me on the right track. My advisors have guided me in the right direction towards my career.”
4. Student Spotlight Thomas Boone Major: Computer Networking Class Of: 2011 Thomas Boone is a freshman from Abingdon, Ill. who came to CSC because of its affordability and location. He is concentrating on computer networking and was attracted to CSC's reputation for having a good computer program. Boone plans on finishing his CISCO certification and finish out a degree in computer networking by possible transferring to Illinois State University."I'm pretty busy. My networking class keeps me very occupied, and I also work for CSC's Channel 22 as a talent grant student and so between those two things and my other classes, I stay very busy throughout the week," says Boone."I think Sandburg does a good job as a community college as far as the campus life, staff and programs offered here. I really enjoy my teachers here. My networking teacher has a ton of knowledge, and she has the same certification that I am going for."
5. Student Spotlight Jo-Paul Jones Major: University Studies Class Of: 2010 Jo-Paul Jones is a sophomore at CSC and also plays basketball for the Chargers. Jones had planned on attending UIS for teaching, but decided that he wanted to pursue a new career path in marketing or business as well as play basketball."It’s not too crowded here and I like the small class sizes. I've learned a lot from instructor Jill Johnson about psychology. We participate in discussions during class, but she also expects you to do your work," says Jones.Jones also takes advantage of the opportunities available to him as a member of Trio Student Support Services.
6. Student Spotlight Tony Valdes Major: University Studies Class Of: 2010 Tony Valdes is a sophomore interested in transferring to a university with an outstanding radiology program. Valdes is also a member of the Charger baseball team. "During my first year here I learned a lot about responsibility and living on my own. Now that I am in my second year, I know the college 'game', so it’s been simpler," says Valdes."Here everyone is friendly and it's more student-oriented."
