- Grade 6 camp Wannakumbac – Each year, the grade sixes from all schools in the division go to camp wannakumbac for 2 nights, 3 days. The experience concludes of water testing, hiking, nature art, nature poetry, animal calls, history of prison war camps, animal totums, astronomy and music of nature. Grade 7 outdoor trip – During both of our grade 7 years, we went to the south side of Burlington beach. The trip consisted of two day trip outings. The first day we did a GPS scavenger hunt, canoeing and kayaking skills, we did canoe planks where you and your partner balance on a wood board that is laid across the canoe. The second day consisted all of relays. They included swimming relays, running relays, canoe races and the Louis Reil relay were you are on a team and swim a distance, canoe a distance then build a fire with matches that you had while swimming and canoeing. Whatever group had their egg boiled first won. Field Trips – past class field trips have included the Souris swinging bridge & rock shop, Carberry sand dunes transported by a covered horse wagon, mini-golfing at clear lake, swimming, a ducks unlimited walking tour in Brandon with a scavenger hunt.
- Bike Trip – In the past, our one gym teacher gave us the option of going on a bike trip. The trip concluded of a total of roughly 4 hours of biking through the day. Done in clear lake in october. Ski trip – our high school has the options for the 9 and 10’s to go on a one night, 2 day trip to Asessippi in December. The 11 and 12’s get the same optional chance in March. You can try either snow boarding or skiing at a discounted rate.Farming (jacquelyn) – “I live on a farm and have my whole life. We raise cattle and produce grain. Everyday jobs for me would be doing chores around the farm and driving tractors to the needed field.” Horsebacking (eveline) – “I started riding by myself when I was around 4 years old. I have ridden on a variety of trails and have entered in shows, fairs and rodeos.”Cabin – Other than working at the pool over summer, we both enjoy going to our own cabin. Here we go on walks or runs, canoe rides, paddle boats, water skiing, wake boarding, tubing, fishing trips and beach activities including volleyball.
- In March this past year we went on our Bronze Duke of Ed qualifying journey. The trip concluded of a 4.2 km either snowshoe or ski into the site. There was a lot of snow shovelling to set up our tent and pathways around the campsite had to be shovelled out. Skills like navigation, trail sightings, fire building, cooking, camping preparation and the buddy system were learned. It gave us the knowledge of what all needs to happen and be prepared for camping in the winter compared to camping in the summer.
- Earlier this month, we went on our pre-silver practice trip. It was a lot different than our winter trip. Our packing had to be lighter, our food had to be more precise and we depending on each other differently. For example, we split up the sleeping gear and food to make our weight more even. This trip, we learned a brand new set of outdoor skills. This time we hiked in with backpacks, not a sleigh carrying our gear. Our food had to be stored and cleaned up better due to bears in the site. Many of the skills we learned on the winter trip were transferred to this trip including; navigation, trail sightings, fire building, cooking, camping preparation and the buddy system.
- Canoe and bike trip – It would be nice to see the grade 7’s get their trip but also expand it too the other grades in our school. Same with the bike trip. Outdoor gym classes – in middle years, our gym classes involved GPS work, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, garbage challenge clean ups and outdoor soocer, lacrosse, baseball and frisbee games. Through high school gym classes are only inside during the winter. We go outside in the fall and spring to do a soccer game or complete our 12 minute distant runs.Archery – We have heard of grades before us having done archery at school. From all the good reviews we have heard, we want to give it a try. We have the equipment, so why not use it.Hands on sciences and labs – our science rooms have the ability and equipment to perform experiments but are not always used to their full ability. On the other hand we do not know the funding that is needed but we feel that students need the other option of hands on learning instead of copying and watching videos of other people doing the experiments. Roof garden – the students in our school along with one motivated teacher feel that having a school roof top garden would be beneficial. Science classes could analyze and research on the vegetation growing. The food produced would be used in the grade 9 foods and nutrition course and the school canteen. We would set up a compost bin and use are compost as nutrition for the garden.
