2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Editor's Notes
This is my second year at McCullough. I moved here from Louisiana, where I was an elementary librarian for 16 years. I taught junior high before I became a librarian. I am married, and I have 3 grown kids and 5 grandsons! I love being a librarian, I love kids, and I love reading, so I think I have the most perfect job in the world!
The library staff is here to help you with a smile!
If a Tuesday or a Thursday falls before a holiday, I will not be staying until 5:00. If I am absent on a Tuesday or Thursday, the library will be closed. I will try to make an announcement when I am out on a Tuesday or a Thursday.
The downstairs library is closed at certain time, and Mrs. Christian will put a sign on the door. You may enter the library through the upstairs doors and use the upstairs library.
Consists of 30 computers. These are the computers used for morning and advisory computer use.
Teachers and the PTA use this room. PAWS, an after school tutoring program will be held in this room on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00-5:00.
Two coin copy machines, one upstairs and one downstairs. Follow the copyright law that is posted above the machines.
There are gate at the upstairs and downstairs entrances to the library. Gates are very expensive and very sensitive. Do not ever touch the gates. You must enter and exit the gates single file. If the security alarm goes off as you leave the library, you must stop and come back. Sometimes the gates go off for no reason. The gates are here to keep us honest.
30 computers
Parents will be called if books go too far overdue.. The fines or lost book record will stay on your permanent school record.
There are pencils and paper for your use. You are welcome to use our pencils, but please don’t walk off with them. Remember to put them back for the next student who needs a pencil.
On the left side of the upstairs library, if you are facing the books. These books are in Dewey decimal order.
Fiction is on the right side if you are facing the books. Fiction books are in alpha order by the author’s last name. Remember you can check out the display books.
Biographies factual stories about people living and dead. Please keep it neat! In alphabetical order by last name of the person the book is about.
Fiction only and arranged by author’s last name. These books wrap around the stairwell.
You may check out books that are displayed any where in the library. The displays are changed out and it is well worth checking the books on them out.
We will not write passes for you to get back into class if you took too long in the library.
There will be a sign up sheet at each computer, with a checklist. If anything is wrong with the computer, or if there is any trash, papers or pencils around the computer you need to let us know. You must clean up your area before you leave the computer.
Write your username and password in your planner!!! Bring it with you everytime you come to the lab. This information will stay with you all the way through high school.
Abide by the copyright policy posted above the copy machine. Transpariencies will be made in the downstairs library
Our fire drill route in the library is down the stairs, out the right hand back door in the commons, and wait together in the back.
The library is not a place to visit and have a party with friends. You must be reading or doing work. If you are staring into space you will be asked not to come back. When you get up, tuck in your chair and pick up after yourself.
We serve 2000 students in our library and computer labs. We want you to use the library, but we must caution you to use your time wisely. You have heard the rules, and they are not difficult to keep. We expect you to behave like nice, respectful, and educated people. We will always treat you with respect, and we expect you to show the library and the library staff the same respect. The rules in the library and labs cover behavior, computer responsibility, and cleaning up your area. We will be keeping a record of students we have to speak to. Three strikes, and you will not be able to use the library or lab services. When your class comes to the library, you will sit a a table and do book work. You will not be allowed in the library on a pass, or during free time. Severe consequences include detention and referrals. I have not had to do any of these things yet, and I do not expect to have to this year.
