2. Introductions
Southern Oregon University Business Management.
Resident Assistant for two years.
National Residence Hall Honorary 3 years.
Union Building employee for 3-1/2 years.
Currently work with resident assistants and advise student leader organization.
4. Internal Organizational Identity
How do you define an organizations identity?
Determined by the established history and the values instilled within members.
Value is the most important piece.
Your internal identity should empower you.
Constitution is the backbone of every organization.
It’s a ripple effect with your general members.
5. External Organizational Identity
What do people say about your organization?
What type of professional influence do you want to have in the college?
What type of influence do you want to have on students?
Your reputation as seen by others may be different than how you view
yourselves.
There needs to be consistency.
6. Competition With Organizations
How do you differentiate yourself?
What’s your brand and how do you market it?
Events can have a huge impact on competition.
Events show who you are, what you represent, and what you bring to the college.
Consistent, high quality events will make you stand out.
Events are how everyone sees you.
7. Competition for Members
Recruitment is always a struggle for organizations.
What can you offer?
How do you show them value in joining your organization?
What do you do to create a buy-in?
As incoming professional students they want something worth their time.
Don’t overpromise and sell yourself as something you are not.
8. First Activity
Idenititree
Break up into groups of 2 or 3.
You are going to ‘create’ an organization based upon an identity.
The image of the tree shows each part of the whole.
It’s up to you as leaders of the organization to create that identity.
9. Navigating Conflict
Conflict is: active and expressed struggle/disagreement between to
or more people with opposing views, needs, values, principles etc.
Process to move forward:
Discuss
Define and identity the problem
Determine deal breakers
Develop a plan
Implement and evaluate
10. Key Conflict Points
When addressing a conflict all parties should be:
Respectful
Honest
Neutral and non-judgmental
Be aware of self-biases
Avoid criticism
Ask open ended questions
Check in “Am I understanding you correctly?”

11. Second activity
Conflict role play
Student Leader 1: Accuses member of saying disrespectful things about s/he on
social media.
Student Leader 2: Denies and says it was a ‘general discussion’ that lots of
people were talking about and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
Mediator: Help resolve the issue (and deal with your suspicions).

Don’t be afraid to ask the more difficult questions.
Internal versus external identity.
How do you differentiate yourself and create a buy-in for new members.
Conflict is unavoidable but remember they key points.
