An education technology startup called inBloom that collected and stored student data shut down in 2014 due to privacy concerns from parents in New York. In 2015, there was a large amount of legislation proposed or passed related to student data privacy across 46 states, including California's Student Online Personal Information Protection Act. There is ongoing debate around expanding the use of education technology tools in schools while addressing privacy fears over how student data is collected, used, secured, and accessed.
