A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the concerted efforts of a person or people to prevent an Internet site or service from functioning efficiently or at all, temporarily or indefinitely. Perpetrators of DoS attacks typically target sites or services hosted on high-profile web servers such as banks, credit card payment gateways, and even root name servers. The term is generally used with regards to computer networks, but is not limited to this field, for example, it is also used in reference to CPU resource management. There are two general forms of Dos attacks: those that crash services and those that flood services.
One common method of attack involves saturating the target machine with external communications requests, such that it cannot respond to legitimate traffic, or responds so slowly as to be rendered effectively unavailable. In general terms, DoS attacks are implemented by either forcing the targeted computer to reset, or consuming its resources so that it can no longer provide its intended service or obstructing the communication media between the intended users and the victim so that they can no longer communicate adequately.
High Performance Solr and JVM Tuning Strategies used for MapQuest’s Search Ah...
MapQuest developed a search ahead feature for their mobile app to enable auto-complete searching across their large dataset. They used Solr and implemented various techniques to optimize performance, including custom routing, analysis during ETL, and extensive JVM tuning. Their architecture included multiple Solr clusters with different configurations. Through testing and monitoring, they were able to meet their sub-140ms response time requirement for queries.

After reading the topic you are probably asking yourself: “Why I’ve never heard about Cassandra Streams?”. The reason is because Cassandra didn’t have any streams support. Until now.
The project started as a preparation to multi regional deployment, so we needed to test Cassandra and answer several simple questions:
· what will be the replication lag, or how long will it take for each mutation to propagate?
· will we be losing any mutation?
· will we see any additional load and/or other problems?
· and zillions of other questions
To answer them, we decided to integrate Cassandra with Amazon Kinesis, so we can track any individual mutation and analyze replication stats. That is how our Cassandra Streams integration was born. Currently it supports several stream platforms, like Kinesis and Kafka.
During this talk you will learn how we did it, how we used it to test Cassandra in Multi-regional setup and what are other possible applications of this concept.

Cassandra is a structured storage system designed for large amounts of data across commodity servers. It provides high availability with eventual consistency and scales incrementally without centralized administration. Data is partitioned across nodes and replicated for fault tolerance. Writes are applied locally and propagated asynchronously, prioritizing availability over consistency. It uses a gossip protocol for membership and failure detection.
Analyzing and Interpreting AWR

Machine learning plays a critical role in providing a great Netflix member experience. It is used to drive many parts of the site including video recommendations, search results ranking, and selection of artwork images. Providing high-fidelity, near real-time data is increasingly important for these machine learning pipelines, especially as multi-armed bandit and reinforcement learning techniques, in addition to more ""traditional"" supervised learning, become more prevalent. With access to this data, models are able to converge more quickly, features can be updated more frequently, and analysis can be done in a more timely manner.
In this talk, we will focus on the practical details of leveraging Flink to process trillions of events per day, work with the time dimension, and manage large and frequently-changing state. We will discuss different processing schemes and dataflows, scalability and resiliency challenges we tackled, operational considerations, and instrumentation we added for monitoring job health in production.

Delay routine
This document discusses using counters and delays in microprocessors. It explains that counters can be used to specify how many times an instruction is executed in a loop. Machine learning plays a critical role in providing a great Netflix member experience. It is used to drive many parts of the site including video recommendations, search results ranking, and selection of artwork images. Providing high-fidelity, near real-time data is increasingly important for these machine learning pipelines, especially as multi-armed bandit and reinforcement learning techniques, in addition to more ""traditional"" supervised learning, become more prevalent. With access to this data, models are able to converge more quickly, features can be updated more frequently, and analysis can be done in a more timely manner.
In this talk, we will focus on the practical details of leveraging Flink to process trillions of events per day, work with the time dimension, and manage large and frequently-changing state. We will discuss different processing schemes and dataflows, scalability and resiliency challenges we tackled, operational considerations, and instrumentation we added for monitoring job health in production.

In this talk, we’ll cover some of the strategies we employ and discuss our always evolving approach to API stress testing and its “unit test” equivalent, redline testing.

Delay routine
This document discusses using counters and delays in microprocessors. It explains that counters can be used to specify how many times an instruction is executed in a loop. A loop counter is loaded into a register and decremented or incremented at each iteration. Delays can be implemented using software instructions like NOP, DCR, and DCX that are executed a number of times. Delays are calculated based on the number of T-states, or clock cycles, required by each instruction. Both 8-bit and 16-bit counters can provide timing delays, with 16-bit allowing for longer maximum delays. Nested loops can also extend delay times.

The Building Blocks of QuestDB, a Time Series Database

Traditionally, databases have treated timestamps just as another data type. However, when performing real-time analytics, timestamps should be first class citizens and we need rich time semantics to get the most out of our data. We also need to deal with ever growing datasets while keeping performant, which is as fun as it sounds.
It is no wonder time-series databases are now more popular than ever before. Join me in this session to learn about the internal architecture and building blocks of QuestDB, an open source time-series database designed for speed. We will also review a history of some of the changes we have gone over the past two years to deal with late and unordered data, non-blocking writes, read-replicas, or faster batch ingestion.

ViewShift: Hassle-free Dynamic Policy Enforcement for Every Data Lake
Dynamic policy enforcement is becoming an increasingly important topic in today’s world where data privacy and compliance is a top priority for companies, individuals, and regulators alike. In these slides, we discuss how LinkedIn implements a powerful dynamic policy enforcement engine, called ViewShift, and integrates it within its data lake. We show the query engine architecture and how catalog implementations can automatically route table resolutions to compliance-enforcing SQL views. Such views have a set of very interesting properties: (1) They are auto-generated from declarative data annotations. (2) They respect user-level consent and preferences (3) They are context-aware, encoding a different set of transformations for different use cases (4) They are portable; while the SQL logic is only implemented in one SQL dialect, it is accessible in all engines.
