Project Stoke is working to address the global health issue of smoke inhalation from open cooking fires in developing countries. Interviews with customers in Kenya found that Project Stoke's smoke-reduced stoves significantly reduced cooking smoke. However, cultural barriers like food preparation norms and types of local foods present challenges to scaling the business. The document reviews literature on the health effects of indoor air pollution from cooking smoke at different life stages, finding adverse impacts on pregnancy outcomes, child development, and respiratory health. It establishes a need for alternative stove solutions.
