World Cooking:
Pounded Yam (Fufu)
African Safari Song!
Ingredients
2 cups yam powder
2 cups of water
Directions
Bring 2 cups of water to a boil on a stove top. Use
a 2 Qt pot or larger. Whilst still on the stove top
add the yam powder and mix it together using a
wooden spoon. The pounded yam is ready when it
smoothens and thickens into a dough.
This process takes about 5 minutes
This yam side dish is much like our
mashed potatoes! It’s eaten alongside a
meal brimming with vegetables,
particularly vegetable soup.

Oh, I’m going on an African safari,
Oh, I’m going on an African
safari,
Oh, I’m going on an African safari,
Oh, won’t you come along with
me?
I hope I’ll see some lions on safari,
Oh, I hope I’ll see some zebras on
safari,
Oh, I hope I’ll see some cheetahs
on safari,
Oh, won’t you come along with
me?

Not only does helping your child to be a
citizen of the world promote a global
sense of togetherness, but it also helps
your child’s early literacy! Learning
about other communities, countries, and
people around the world requires
learning a more advanced vocabulary,
and puts them ahead in critical and
abstract thinking.
Tips for Parents:Facts and Figures!

We’re Going On A Lion Hunt
By David Axtell
“In this charming rendition of a
well-known children’s chant, two
sisters are looking for not a bear
but a lion—a lion that lives on
the African savanna.”
Galimoto
By Karen Williams
“When Kondi tells his older
brother Ufulu that he is going to
make a galimoto, Ufulu laughs at
him. Where in the village will
Kondi find enough wire to shape
into a truck, a car, even a
bicycle?”
Giraffes Can’t Dance
By Giles Andreae
“Gerald was a tall giraffe whose
neck was long and slim. But his
knees were awfully crooked and
his legs were rather thin.”
