We are going on a Safari!

 1. 1. We are going on a SAFARI!
Ms. Duran’s 4th grade class is going to the Serengeti!
2. 2. Jambo! (“Hello” in Swahili)
Today, we are researchers visiting the Serengeti.
We will learn:
What is a Safari? What should we pack?
The Geography and Biome. (What is a Biome again?)
And, of course, all about THE ANIMALS!
Let’s hop in the Jeep
and start our
ADVENTURE!
3. 3. What is a Safari? What should we bring?
Safari translated means “journey”. Most people think of a Safari as looking for and observing the animals of Africa in their natural habitat.
Let’s pack! Why are each of these items important?
4. 4. The hat is to keep the sun of your face. There is little shade on the open grasslands of the 6,900 square miles of the Serengeti.
The binoculars are to get a better view of the many animals. There are 200,00 Zebras alone out here!
The camera is to keep memories of the wildlife.
You have to eat and drink during the long day of exploring. A safari can last from sunrise to sunset. Sometimes longer if you aren’t afraid of the dark! Don’t worry! Ours will be much shorter. We will have a yummy safari snack when we are done.
5. 5. Where is the Serengeti?
The Serengeti is in the country of Tanzania, which is in the continent of Africa. Go to this site, click on Africa, and then find and click on Tanzania to learn about the country.
Let's find the Serengeti!
Answer these questions:
What is the capitol of Tanzania?
On what ocean is the capitol located?
What year was the country of Tanzania formed?
6. 6. The Savannah
You will probably recognize this video:
7. 7. The Lion King is set in the Savannah. In real life these animals may not be quite so friendly with each other as they are in a movie. Also, people live on the Savannah, too. Here is how these migrating animals really interact:
8. 8. Let’s Look for some Animals!
On this trip we will be observing seven Serengeti beasts as they migrate across the grasslands. We will spot:
Lions
Hyenas
Zebras
Giraffes
Rhinos
Elephants
Leopards
Your assignment as a researcher is to learn facts about each animal. Then you must write one question/answer for each of the seven animals. I will be using some of your questions to make this Friday’s quiz. Now, let’s explore.
9. 9. Simba = Lion
Click on the links on each page. Read the facts and watch the video.
Do not forget to write a test question.
Look there's a lion!
10. 10. Fisi = Hyena
Did you hear that hyena laugh?
11. 11. PundaMilia = Zebra
Aren't the stripes pretty?
12. 12. Twigga = Giraffe
Those Giraffes are as tall as the trees!
13. 13. Kifaru = Rhino
Wow! A rhino!
14. 14. Tembo = Elephant
Elephants are huge!
15. 15. Chui = Leopard
Leopards are master hunters.
This video has some graphic images. Let me know if you do not want to see a leopard hunt.
16. 16. FUN!
Let’s play some GAMES!
Animal Sounds Game
Track Lions on an African Adventure
17. 17. Partner Project
Find a partner.
Find an animal that lives in the Serengeti that we did not discuss.
Use reliable, educational websites to research this animal. You will need to gather facts. Think: What is the classification? What does it eat? What are some neat things about it?
You and your fellow researcher will have 20 minutes to learn about your animal. Then, you will present what you found to the rest of the class.
18. 18. I have printed this word search for you. It is in your homework folder.
It is due tomorrow.
19. 19. KWA HERI!!Goodbye!
Thanks for being such great explorers and researchers!
