The Monster who was Loved

By Mrs. Palmer
Beginning (main character introduced, setting described, problem introduced)

Bernard could not stop his sobbing. Tears rolled down his soft blue fur finally coming to land on
the patchwork quilt he sat on. All of the other stuffed animals in David’s tiny bedroom were teasing him
and calling him a monster because dark purple horns shot up from just above his ears. Bernard
snuggled into the pillow where David had been sleeping just a few minutes ago and continued to weep
softly.
Bernard looked up to the one window in the bedroom and decided it was time to escape! The dog
Middle (Plot) Roadblock #1 (main character tries to solve problem)

The bedroom was quiet now as David had gone to school. David was small for his age, and was
often picked on by bullies. When David was sad, Bernard was used to being picked up and snuggled
because he was David’s favorite. Quietly, Bernard climbed to the top of the rickety nightstand next to
the bed. He stood on his tiptoes and reached up to the window sill, but the window was out of reach.
Perhaps, he thought, I can grab on to one of the blue curtains that hangs down below the window sill
and swing up and out!
Middle (Plot) Roadblock #2 (main character still tries to solve problem)

“Swoosh, swoosh” went the curtain as Bernard hung on tightly and pumped his little blue legs
going higher and higher underneath the window. On the count of three, he let go just as his blue body
swung directly in front of the window. He reached out quickly, let go of the curtain and grabbed for the
window sill. He missed. He began to tumble back toward the bed when just as quickly as he started to
fall, he paused in mid air.
High Point (main character solves problem)

One of Bernard’s purple horns had gotten caught on the latch on the window sill. His body
arched around so his face was on the sill. Next, he took his blue paws and pulled himself up further.
“Pop,” the horn slid free and he was up, balancing on the sill. The sound of “monster,” from the teddy
bears in the room caused Bernard to become startled, and he began to fall. Out the window he went
landing on the soft path below directly in front of the front door.
End (all characters are taken care of and pieces are wrapped up)

Bernard couldn’t move, as his back felt sore and his arms and legs were all tangled. Just then
he heard David’s voice coming toward him. “You are way too important to me to try to get away,
Bernard,” chuckled David. “You cheer me up and each day I get stronger standing up to those bullies.
They didn’t even pick on me today. And one more thing,” whispered David, “You were my dad’s
monster stuffed animal and that is why you are soooo special to me.”
