Storm Thorgerson founded the graphic design company Hipgnosis in 1968. He became known for designing album covers for famous rock bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. His process involved listening to the music to understand its style, drawing rough concepts, creating prototypes, photographing album art concepts, and editing the final image before completing the cover design.

2. TYPE OF WORK
Storm thorgerson first founded the company “Hipgnosis” in 1968 of which was
a graphic art design company. Both Strom Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell then
later went on to working on many famous single covers as well as album
covers. Such as album covers for:
• Pink Floyd
• Led zeppelin
• Black Sabbath
• etc

3. BRIEF:
• To begin with Storm Thorgerson would listen to the piece of music/ style of
music being performed by the group. This would then mean that he would
be able to create some ideas styled to the band/music.
• I will firstly decide what piece of music I am going to base my music video on
which will then mean that I will have an incite into what sort of design I am
going to create which will have some relation to the piece of music.

4. ROUGHS:
• This means that Storm thorgerson would be able to meet with the band and
draw up some plans making sure that the style in which the cover would be
created and what would be incorporated into the album artwork would
suite the band therefore the band would like it.
• Due to the fact that I am going to design the cover as well choose the piece
of music that I am going to base my coursework on, it means that I will only
have to convince myself that the design is right and related to the piece of
music or style of music.

5. TESTS:
• This would mean that Storm Thorgerson would be able to create some
prototypes of what the design is going to incorporate and include and then
display it to the band. This would also mean that the band would be able to
look over the prototype and if any adjustments need to be made then the
band can give the designer advice.
• I will then begin to create some prototypes of what the cover is going to
include/ incorporate. This will then mean that I will have an idea into what
type of designs I like and suite the style and which do not, through process of
elimination.

6. SHOOT:
• A location would then be chosen as well as many photographers and
volunteers whom of which would set up any features or objects that might
want to be included so that the image taken is one that the band will
approve and be happy with.
• I will then decide where in which I will base the cover on due to location. The
location will be chosen depending on what piece of music I choose as well
as in relation to what style of music the piece is. For example if the style is
dark and depressing then the location will reflect this.

7. EDITING:
• The image that had been taken would then be shown in front of a
specialized teem of which would then edit the photograph that had been
chosen for the cover so that it could be perfected and ready for the final
stage.
• After I have created prototypes and chosen the location as well as taken
the shot I will then edit the photo/designs so that the cover will look the best
it possibly can.

8. ART WORK:
• This is when the final stage in the process would be completed which would
mean that the final shot that had been chosen would have any final editing
completed to it. After this the cover would finally be finished and ready to
be added to the case.
• If there are any final editing techniques or areas in which could be worked
on I will finally edit the almost final product so that it will appeal to the target
audience which will depend on the piece of music chosen.
