I am a Fluid Dynamics specialist and Director of an engineering consultancy firm Paul Engineering, that specialises
in solving problems for marine, renewable energy and the built environment. I have a background as an engineering
consultant with twelve years' experience working and studying in the field of Fluid Dynamics and have also helped
to grow a start-up business in the renewable energy sector. My MSc gave a deep understanding of fluid theory but it
was through my employment, first at CD-adapco and later at Lloyd's Register, that I honed my technical capabilities
and developed skills in other areas crucial to consultancy work such as project management, client relations,
marketing, and, as Deputy Manager of the Fluid Dynamics Group at Lloyd's Register, management of a growing and
highly successful team of fluid dynamics engineers. These skills I later put to good use as I worked to grow and
develop Zyba, a wave energy technology start-up, and Paul Engineering into successful businesses. In doing so, I
have learnt about many aspects of running a small business, including areas such as marketing, contract law, small
business accounting and tax relief schemes on investments (e.g. SEIS). I am resourceful, committed and quick to
transfer my experience and skills to new industries and opportunities.

Providing a wide range of fluid dynamics-based engineering services in the
marine, renewable energy, and fire and smoke sectors. I have assembled a small
team of highly-experienced experts with backgrounds in some of the largest firms
in their industries to provide a knowledgeable, specialised and personalised
service to our clients at considerably lower costs than are prevalent in the current
market. A broad, cross-sector knowledge base enables us to utilise experience and
capabilities from one industry in all those that we operate in.
www.paul.engineering
During my time at Zyba, we were working to optimise and modularise an exciting
but simple new renewable energy technology called CCell, which extracts energy
from ocean waves, to further reduce costs of manufacture, deployment and
operation. Partly funded by Innovate UK, we sought transform what had already
been shown to be the most hydrodynamically efficient technology in the wave
energy market into a saleable product. My role involved project planning,
pitching to investors, managing resources, seeking deployment partners,
marketing, and overseeing the hydrodynamics component of the project.
www.ccell.co.uk
My role involved assisting the Fluid Dynamics Manager with technical and
administrative oversight of the Fluid Dynamics Group, which we grew from four
to nine technical specialists in the time I was there. I operated as theme leader in
Lloyd's Register Marine's Technology Governance Process developing
technology policy and strategy for the Optimising Propulsion Performance theme.
It was my responsibility to ensure that Lloyd's Register was technologically
prepared for market changes in this area over the following five years.
Additionally, I was responsible for advising and assisting Lloyd's Register IS with
planning, purchasing and maintaining systems and services that our department
relied upon, as well as assisting colleagues with IS issues.
I performed and oversaw a wide variety of fluid dynamics-based consultancy
work, along with occasional on-site measurements and observations. The majority
of projects were for the marine industry, though I also worked on renewable
energy projects from time to time. Major foci were design optimisation, cavitation
and cavitation-erosion modelling, aerodynamic drag analysis, pollution and
environmental analysis, and energy-saving devices and their scale effects. In
addition, my role involved preparation of proposals, budgeting, project
management and business promotion.

During my time in this role I helped improve Lloyd's Register's CFD capabilities
from simple single-phase ship wake prediction to complex multi-phase and
multi-physics analyses.
My function was to use client's cases to test new features in CD-adapco CFD
software. My projects included investigation of turbomachinery, Large Eddy
Simulation (LES) and multi-phase flows.
My duties included updating and expanding the technical documentation for
CD-adapco software.
Technical Skills
I am expert at using both STAR-CD and STAR-CCM+, capable at using OpenFOAM and FDS, and have some experience
with Fluent and CFX. I am proficient at using modeFrontier for optimisation analyses. Whilst I do not consider myself to
be a programmer, I can code in FORTRAN, Java, R and Matlab to an intermediate level. Upon occasion, I have had reason
to use AutoCAD, Rhino and NAPA, but only as a beginner. I am proficient on both Windows and Linux operating systems
and have a good knowledge of hardware requirements for HPC, having been responsible for advising and assisting Lloyd's
Register IS and their contractors with planning, purchasing and maintaining Lloyd's Register's HPC cluster.

Interests
As well my experience of understanding and improving engineering systems, I have a keen interest in how people and
societies behave and operate. To satisfy this, I have spent the past four years studying towards an Open University degree
in Economics and International Development.
I enjoy learning languages and studied Spanish at night school for the three years prior to starting at the Open University. I
also have some recollection of my schoolboy French.
I am a keen cyclist, both on and off road, and an active member of Lewisham Cyclists. In the last few of years I have
cycled in France, Holland, Germany, the Czech Republic and Sweden, along with many rides in the UK. I also enjoy fine
food, beers and wines and consider these important aspects of any cycling holiday.
I am an occasional climber, though it has been many years since I last climbed on real rock.
