The 1st Nigeria Hydrocarbon Measurement Conference was held virtually in February 2021 with over 488 participants from 31 countries. The goal was to discuss developments in hydrocarbon measurement technology and standards to maximize accuracy and profitability. Several industry experts presented on topics like minimizing measurement uncertainty, adopting best practices, training personnel, and using modern metering technologies. They emphasized the importance of accurate measurement for reservoir management, production optimization, calculating taxes and royalties, and resolving disputes. Participants asked over 60 questions and agreed the conference should become an annual event to improve hydrocarbon accounting in Nigeria.

The continental shelf is a submerged physiographic unit that represents the ascent between the coastal area and the continental escarpment. Its extent varies due to tectonic factors, reaching several hundred kilometers in some areas or being very narrow or absent in others. Sediments on the continental shelf include fine sandy sediments transported by coastal storms and muddy sediments transported offshore in suspension and deposited across the shelf. These sediments form successions hundreds of meters thick characterized by rhythmic layers of mud and fine sand. Turbidity currents can transport sediments from the continental shelf over the continental slope and form deep-water turbidite deposits.
This document provides guidance on techniques for acquiring sedimentological data from clastic rocks, including sedimentary logging. The key points covered include:
1. The essential equipment needed for sedimentary logging includes a notebook, measuring tools, and grain size comparator.
2. An important initial step is selecting a representative logging route that is physically accessible and shows continuity.
3. Descriptions of lithological units like mudstones and sandstones involve semi-quantitative scales for aspects like bioturbation.
4. Logs are plotted using scales for lithology, thickness, and grain size. Sedimentary structures are coded onto the log.
5. Example logs and exercises are provided to demonstrate plotting techniques and
Sedimentology Lecture 4. concept of sedimentary facies, association and proce...Sigve Hamilton Aspelund
The document discusses sedimentary facies analysis and the concepts of facies, facies associations, and sedimentary processes. It defines a facies as the physical features of a sedimentary deposit that can be used to distinguish it from adjacent deposits. Facies associations are genetically related groups of facies that record particular depositional environments. Sedimentary processes include selective processes that transport and structure sediments, as well as mass processes involving large sediment movements like debris flows, grain flows, mud flows, and turbidity flows.
This document discusses river deltas, including their definition, classification, and importance. It begins by defining a delta as a deposit built by a river into a body of permanent water, consisting of both terrestrial and marine/lacustrine strata. Approximately 25% of the world's population lives on deltaic coastlines and deltas host close to 30% of oil, coal, and gas deposits. Common classifications of deltas include geomorphology-based (e.g. lobate), stratigraphy-based (e.g. shelf-type), and process-based approaches (e.g. river-, wave-, or tide-dominated). Key delta types discussed include the river-dominated Mississippi delta and the wave-dom
Continental depositional systems accumulate and distribute sediment far from marine environments via gravity and water flows. The most common systems are colluvial, alluvial, and fluvial. Colluvial systems involve downslope sediment movement via rainwash, sheetwash, or creep. Alluvial systems form distinctive fan patterns as streams emerge from mountains. Fluvial systems create complex depositional patterns as rivers transport sediment from mountains to basins via braided, meandering, anastomosing, or straight channel patterns.
This document describes a 5-day course on depositional systems in sedimentary rock records. The course aims to show how ancient environments can be reconstructed by interpreting sedimentary processes and the environments they operated in. Students will learn about concepts like sedimentary facies, hydrodynamics, and base level changes. The course will cover modern and ancient depositional systems, analyzing rocks and successions, sedimentary facies and structures, strata, stratification, and using this to understand geological histories. It includes lectures, lab activities, and virtual field trips.
11 projects on well top testing and remidiation of annular integrity loss (1)Sigve Hamilton Aspelund
The document discusses techniques developed at Louisiana State University to address gas flow behind casing issues. It describes early-time gas flow symptoms and mechanisms. It then discusses the Top Cement Pulsation technique developed by LSU to address early-time gas flow by liquefying cement slurry. For late-time gas flow, it provides statistics on sustained casing pressure occurrences and regulations. It outlines methods developed by LSU to diagnose gas leaks using bleed-down and buildup tests and assess failure risk. Finally, it presents the Buoyant Kill technique developed by LSU to remove sustained casing pressure using non-aqueous heavy kill fluids through displacement experiments.
The document summarizes the geology of the Oseberg oilfield in Norway. Four wells were analyzed using well logs to identify geological features like reservoir intervals. A stratigraphic cross-section showed formations thinning from north to south, likely due to uplift. A structural cross-section showed formations intersected at lower depths from north to south, indicating normal faults. Fluid analysis of logs identified oil in most formations except some gas in the Ness Formation. The biggest reservoir is the Drake Formation, which contains oil across the field. Rifting caused multiple faulting that influenced the geology.
