STEPPING INTO THE
CLASSROOM
ETEC 424 BY: KRIS SIMMONS
HOW WILL I BE TEACHING?
• This is one of the most important questions I have asked myself about teaching. It
is the foundation of what will set the standard for your students and yourself.
• Will there be visual aids? Will it be an energetic classroom setting? Will you have
time to accomplish everything and stay with the lesson plans?
We will explore how the Design and Delivery & Behaviorism, Cognitivism and
Constructivism learning theories will be utilized in my classroom.
ENVIRONMENT
One of the most important things is the environment in which I will be teaching my
students. I am able to offer my students an environment rich in dense forest, hiking
trails that open into coves near the waters edge, history and all the fresh open air
you could want. The environment even in an actual classroom setting is the most
impactful for any student. The sights, sounds and smells of which they are exposed
to are going to capture them and determine the rest of their learning adventure.
COGNITIVISM
This is where all the inner workings of the mind come into play. In the cognitivist
theory of learning, is how the mind works and how to find the best way for the
student to learn. The environment in which the student is in plays a factor in this as
well as finding the right methods of encouraging the student to think and problem
solve. This is a theory of opening the mind and engaging the student to move
beyond the questions or problems but finding different avenues to learn and find
the answers or solutions.
ARE THE STUDENTS ENGAGED IN LEARNING?
The next step in the process is engaging the student. I would like to have a lessons
set up where there is group learning but also individual time to learn. I prefer an
interactive and hands-on approach to teaching. I use lots of visual aids, videos,
stories and other materials that will encourage a response that is something
meaningful to the student. If the students are excited and ready for the next lesson
I know I am on the right path.
REPOUR WITH THE STUDENTS
Falling right behind this is making sure I understand and am taking time to reach
out to each individual student. I want them to know not everything will make sense
but we will find the right way to meet their needs. There will be students that will
need extra help or possible special accommodations to be able to learn and I will
ensure those needs are met.
MEMORY
Once I have made it to this chapter in my lessons, I will challenge the students. I will
recap what we have been over and create a way to combine it all at the end of each
lesson. I will take time to ask questions throughout the lesson to make sure we are
still on track.
READY AND PREPARED
I will have to be always ready and prepared to teach a lesson. If I am going to make
any of this work I have to willing to put in the needed time to make sure I can
deliver, in a way my students will understand.
CREATIVE
This is area that is the fun part. I encourage each student to be creative. To have
something to “show” from what they are learning. This was always a huge help in
how I was able to retain key points during a lesson. I want the creative juices to
flow and shine through in the classroom.
