Abstract: Logistic regression with binary and multinomial outcomes is commonly
used, and researchers have long searched for an interpretable measure of the strength
of a particular logistic model. This article describes the large sample properties
of some pseudo-R2 statistics for assessing the predictive strength of the logistic
regression model. We present theoretical results regarding the convergence and
asymptotic normality of pseudo-R2s. Simulation results and an example are also
presented. The behavior of the pseudo-R2s is investigated numerically across a
range of conditions to aid in practical interpretation.

1. Introduction
Logistic regression for binary and multinomial outcomes is commonly used
in health research. Researchers often desire a statistic ranging from zero to one
to summarize the overall strength of a given model, with zero indicating a model
with no predictive value and one indicating a perfect fit. The coefficient of deter-
mination R2 for the linear regression model serves as a standard for such measures
(Draper and Smith (1998)). Statisticians have searched for a corresponding in-
dicator for models with binary/multinomial outcome. Many different R2 statis-
tics have been proposed in the past three decades (see, e.g., McFadden (1973),
McKelvey and Zavoina (1975), Maddala (1983), Agresti (1986), Nagelkerke
(1991), Cox and Wermuch (1992), Ash and Shwartz (1999), Zheng and Agresti
(2000)). These statistics, which are usually identical to the standard R2 when
applied to a linear model, generally fall into categories of entropy-based and
variance-based (Mittlböck and Schemper (1996)). Entropy-based R2 statistics,
also called pseudo-R2s, have gained some popularity in the social sciences (Mad-
dala (1983), Laitila (1993) and Long (1997)). McKelvey and Zavoina (1975)
proposed a pseudo-R2 based on a latent model structure, where the binary/
multinomial outcome results from discretizing a continuous latent variable that
is related to the predictors through a linear model. Their pseudo-R2 is defined
as the proportion of the variance of the latent variable that is explained by the

covariate. McFadden (1973) suggested an alternative, known as “likelihood-
ratio index”, comparing a model without any predictor to a model including all
predictors. It is defined as one minus the ratio of the log likelihood with inter-

are all 0, McFadden’s R2 is 0, but it is never 1. Maddala (1983) developed
another pseudo-R2 that can be applied to any model estimated by the maximum

Other than that, the visuals are mainly about common people’s daily routine nowadays. Along with the visual, the most artistic part in this video is Shanghainese dialogue, which explained food coupons in the way of storytelling. “I accidentally found many food coupons in my grandparents’ house this summer, so I went to ask them about the experiences they had with these coupons. My curiosity leads me to the theme.” said by the producer.
This particular video also has a different meaning to me. My Grandmother passed away one week before the video published at the film festival (at Scottsdale Museum of Commemoratory Art). This piece becomes memorable to me, sadly, my grandmother never had a chance to see the whole piece.

Introduction
I
N MARCH 2012, THE FILM THE HUNGER GAMES WAS RELEASED IN
US theaters by independent film studio Lions Gate in the
third-largest US film premiere in history (Bowles). The film
—about a young girl’s life-or-death struggles in a dystopian
world—is based on the first book in a series by author Suzanne
Collins that remained in the top ten of the New York Times’s
“Children’s Series” best sellers list for more than four years.
Aimed at young adults, the film drew in the same young, largely
female audience who were fans of the Twilight film series1
(Bowles). Although the movie was a box office hit, a controversy
erupted when it hit theaters: many young The Hunger Games fans
who had read the book prior to seeing the film were shocked to
find African-American actors cast in some of the supporting roles.
Fans seemed particularly upset with a black actor playing the
supporting character “Rue,” and took to Twitter to express a
range of emotions, including surprise, disappointment, and
enmity.
The tweets are in sharp contrast to a society that increasingly
tries to identify itself as “postracial,” typically defined as moving
away from evaluative considerations of skin tone and ethnic iden-
tity (Thornton 425). As such, they invite comment beyond the

facile conclusion that this is an isolated occurrence fueled by a
few uneducated individuals. On the contrary, this event is a result
of more systemic issues, which becomes apparent when the Games’
controversy is situated within overlapping contexts that highlight
the complex relationship between race and commercial media.
First, the controversy transpires within emerging discussions of
the United States as a “postracial” society. Although polls have shown
that the election of the first black US president has not changed racial
attitudes significantly (Dowe), discussions of what it means to be pos-
tracial have been increasing in American news media, popular press,
and academia (Wise; Kaplan; McElroy; Wenner). The importance of
these conversations is underscored by the fact that almost all of the
tweets came from young individuals (Anderson), throwing into doubt
the belief that newer generations represent the vanguard of a “color
blind” society.

Implications of Race Representations in The
Hunger Games

Introduction
I
N MARCH 2012, THE FILM THE HUNGER GAMES WAS RELEASED IN
US theaters by independent film studio Lions Gate in the
third-largest US film premiere in history (Bowles). The film
—about a young girl’s life-or-death struggles in a dystopian
world—is based on the first book in a series by author Suzanne
Collins that remained in the top ten of the New York Times’s
“Children’s Series” best sellers list for more than four years.
Aimed at young adults, the film drew in the same young, largely
female audience who were fans of the Twilight film series1
(Bowles). Although the movie was a box office hit, a controversy
erupted when it hit theaters: many young The Hunger Games fans
who had read the book prior to seeing the film were shocked to
find African-American actors cast in some of the supporting roles.
Fans seemed particularly upset with a black actor playing the
supporting character “Rue,” and took to Twitter to express a
range of emotions, including surprise, disappointment, and
enmity.
The tweets are in sharp contrast to a society that increasingly
tries to identify itself as “postracial,” typically defined as moving
away from evaluative considerations of skin tone and ethnic iden-
tity (Thornton 425). As such, they invite comment beyond the

facile conclusion that this is an isolated occurrence fueled by a
few uneducated individuals. On the contrary, this event is a result
of more systemic issues, which becomes apparent when the Games’
controversy is situated within overlapping contexts that highlight
the complex relationship between race and commercial media.
First, the controversy transpires within emerging discussions of
the United States as a “postracial” society. Although polls have shown
that the election of the first black US president has not changed racial
attitudes significantly (Dowe), discussions of what it means to be pos-
tracial have been increasing in American news media, popular press,
and academia (Wise; Kaplan; McElroy; Wenner). The importance of
these conversations is underscored by the fact that almost all of the
tweets came from young individuals (Anderson), throwing into doubt
the belief that newer generations represent the vanguard of a “color
blind” society.
The Hunger Games Controversy: Fans’ Reaction to Race
Representations
In both book and film format, The Hunger Games is a multilayered cri-
tique of power and conflict. On a manifest level, the story is about a
girl who fights with twenty-three other young people in a televised
battle to the death, mandated by her government as a way to control a
formerly revolutionary populace. Like most media texts, however, The
Hunger Games contains deeper connotations, including criticisms of the
Iraq War (Valby) and the hegemony of totalit.

This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
