3. Introduction
Ground Rules:
• Option to pass: You don’t have to be involved in any of the class discussion
if you feel uncomfortable.
• No personal stories: In these lessons we discuss what may impact upon young
people rather than what has actually happened to someone you know.
• If the learning does make you feel concerned, please speak to a staff member
in your school who is designated to support mental health; your teacher will
be able to tell you who they are.
• Be kind to others and listen with respect.
4. Student Task: True/False questions
You will be shown some statements
• Please write the number of the statement and your answer
(T for true and F for false) against it or use the resource provided
Remember there is no right or wrong answer
• Please write exactly what you think
15. Student Task: Anxiety Thermometer
The Anxiety Thermometer is another way of marking how anxiety
increases moving from normal anxiety to an anxiety disorder.
Write down all the different ways in which a young person might feel
anxiety in increasing severity along the thermometer.
Hint : Think of your feelings, thoughts, physical changes and behaviours
16. Class Discussion
Discuss the following:
1. ‘Anxiety is caused purely by external stress and pressure’
2. ‘If you are anxious about something just avoid doing it’
18. Class Discussion
‘Anxiety can be managed effectively’.
Discuss this statement using examples of some of the
techniques described in this module.
19. Note
It is important to be aware of what makes you anxious and how you
react because too much anxiety or anxiety that is not controlled well can
have many negative effects.
Effective anxiety management doesn’t have to be a separate activity but
should be part of a daily regime.
