SIMULATION AND
MODELLING BY
USING STELLA
SOFTWARE
SBI3013: INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY IN BIOLOGY
INTRODUCTION
• STELLA (short for Systems Thinking, Experimental Learning Laboratory with
Animation; also marketed as iThink) is a visual programming language for system
dynamics modeling introduced by Barry Richmond in 1985.
• Allows users to run models created as graphical representations of a system using
four fundamental building blocks.
• Excells and frequently cited/commended as a modelling software by many academic
organization for it's freely adjustable perimeter to manipulate the graph.
ORIGINAL GRAPH OWL=10 RATS=13000
MANIPULATED GRAPH OWL=10 RATS=26000
MANIPULATED GRAPH OWL=17 RATS=11000
DISADVANTAGES
Resources and time are required to
develop a quality learning
experience with simulations.
Need someone who is
expertise to teach the
student or teacher.
Communication between
teacher and student are
not
Need a lot of money
to do the simulation
ADVANTAGES
Promote the use of
critical and evaluative
thinking.
Promote concept
attainment through
experiential practice.
Help students appreciate more
deeply the management of the
environment, politics, community
and culture.
Can reinforce other
skills indirectly
CONCLUSION
• Excellent tool for biologist to predict outcome of many changes in the
environment.
• Technology development such as Stella can benefit society abundantly after
utilization by professionals .
• Give biology teachers advantages in teaching as today's modern world is
heavily dependent on technology.
• Students that excels and experienced in utilizing software technology such as
STELLA have many advantages over students who are not.
