At the end of 2018 I started creating small artworks no bigger than 30x30cm. This is more or less the result of tidying my atelier. I was about to move to a new workspace and was re-considering every item. Throughout time I collected, amongst other things, many inspirational materials, leftover canvasses and wood. I decided to process these leftovers into something new. This is how the first circular artworks emerged. I called them verbal’s because each artwork was a small verbal statement of found characters. These characters originated from plastic bags, magazines, newspapers and wrappings referring to all kinds of contemporary issues, words with a certain load or iconic statements coming from popular culture.
Next to this I found all kinds of strange but graphically interesting plastic objects on the streets. With many of these objects it was difficult or not possible to determine its origin or function. These objects also turned up in my artworks by the name U.F.O., which means in this particular context: Unidentified Found Object.
The support for the characters (verbal’s) and objects (UFO’s) are scraps of canvas, plastic bags, used t-shirts, shower curtains and much more leftover materials. The supporting frame itself is also made of residual wooden slats. So, the artworks are entirely circular. Actual remains of a day, therefore the entire installation is called ‘Remains Of Today’.
Each artwork goes with a reflective story, a lightweight philosophical contemplation. By this contemplation I migrate it to current affairs, dilemmas and observations at present. Sometimes the approach is light footed and absurdist alternated with critical remarks. The found objects, because of their origin, also have an alternative story, the story of the ‘consumer society’. During the short hikes I made, and still make, I gradually discovered these small indefinable pieces of plastic next to the usual litter like tin cans and plastic bags. By placing these typical pieces of plastic on an artistic pedestal, it reflects our daily apparently trivial but harmful actions.
Due to social media and Internet images are always and everywhere. Its communicating power is Immense. We are continuously affected, manipulated and directed in ways we cannot even imagine. My multi-panelled artwork appeals to that conspicuous feeling. It sends all kinds of signals to the viewer but the viewer is not sure of what kind of message it got. At the same time all these artworks emerged from pure coincidence and only gained secondly it’s meaning based on what was found and collected and a hunch of the artist.

WOONkrant 2015
WOON&Kunst
Kunst is emotie
Bij het kiezen van kunst is vooral
van belang dat een werk je blik
vangt. Dat het je moeite kost los te
laten. Dat er een emotie bij je wordt
opgeroepen. Liefst vreugde, ver-
wondering en ontroering maar het
kan ook nieuwsgierigheid, irritatie
of zelfs walging zijn. Kies jouw ei-
gen stijl. De stijl die jouw persoon-
lijkheid weerspiegelt en echt bij je
past. Neem voor het aanschaffen
van kunst de tijd en bezoek veel
galeries, musea en kunstevene-
menten. Gaandeweg ontdek je de
gemene deler waartoe je steeds
wordt aangetrokken. Echte kunst is
een investering voor je leven. Het is
verkrijgbaar in allerlei prijsklassen
en via allerlei kanalen als galeries,
winkels of veilingen.
jouw kunststuk gevonden hebt.

Creatieve Expressie
Over smaak valt niet te twisten. Dat
geldt ook voor wat onder de noe-
mer ‘kunst’ valt en wat niet. Er zijn
heel veel verschillende stijlen en ui-
tingsvormen die niet allemaal even
eenvoudig in een hokje te plaatsen
zijn. Dat is juist ook de bedoeling.
Kunst is het product van creatieve
menselijke expressie. Gevoelens
geuit in schilderijen, tekeningen,
fotografie, beeldhouwwerken, the-
ater, architectuur, literatuur of mu-
ziek.
Kunstvoorwerpen vallen op tussen
‘gewone’ objecten omdat zij een
hogere esthetische waarde heb-
ben.
Kunst wordt pas kunst op het mo-
ment dat het wordt waargenomen.
Je mag het geweldig mooi of bela-
chelijk lelijk vinden. Een kunstenaar
legt in zijn werk zijn persoonlijke
mening en diepste gevoelens van
vreugde, verdriet, angst of verlan-
gen. Kunst spreekt een heel eigen
taal.
Kunststromingen
Kunst kent veel stromingen en ex-
pressievormen. Van klassiek tot ul-
tra modern en alles daar tussenin.
Enkele bekende stromingen zijn:
Op art (Optical art)
Deze vorm van kunst speelt met de
werking van ons oog. Systematisch
geplaatste kleuren, lijnen en struc-
turen zorgen ervoor dat beelden
lijken te bewegen of trillen. Deze
vermakelijke stijl werd in de jaren
Rococo
Een antwoord van jonge kunste-
naars op het serieuzere Barok.
Elegantie, geestigheid en speelse
erotiek kenmerken deze, ietwat kit-
scherige stijl. Veel rococokunste-
naars werkten met verschillende
materialen als porselein en textiel
waarvan beeldjes en wandtapijten
werden gemaakt.
Minimalisme
Eenvoud is kenmerkend voor mi-
nimalistische objecten. Ze stel-
len geen specifieke werkelijkheid
voor noch suggereren zij een an-
dere realiteit. Het is wat het is. De
kunststukken zijn veelal gebaseerd
op geometrische grondvormen
en vloeiende belijningen. Een be-
langrijk aspect is het repeteren van
gelijke eenheden tot een groter
samengesteld geheel. Deze stijl,
ogenschijnlijk onpersoonlijk van
karakter, lijkt afstandelijk en niet zo
eenvoudig te doorgronden maar
kent juist door zijn simpele weer-
gave veel diepgang.
Cobra (Karel Appel), Barok (Ru-
bens), Expressionisme (Pablo Pi-
casso), Renaissance (Leonardo Da-
vinci, Michelangelo), Surrealisme
(Salvador Dalí) en Pointillisme (Paul
Signac). Kunst kan puur decoratief
bedoeld zijn, rebels of toegepast en
functioneel. Kunstenaars die zich
bezig houden met laatst genoemde
kunstvorm besteden bijzonder veel
aandacht aan de bruikbaarheid en
comfort van hun werk. Toepasbaar-
heid staat boven schoonheid. Een
waar kunstwerk waaraan je in je in-
terieur ook praktisch genot beleeft
zijn bijvoorbeeld de stoelen van
Rietveld, Thonet of Friso Kramer.
Streetart
Eerder Grafitti genoemd, is ont-
staan in New York en kende in de
jaren tachtig een hoogtepunt. Het
werk is stilistisch maar droeg vaak
ook een politieke boodschap uit.
Grafitti artists probeerden de kunst-
wereld op te schudden. Dat deze
kunstuiting als rebels gezien wordt,
wordt versterkt doordat het schil-
deren illegaal en vaak in het holst
van de nacht gebeurde. Streetart
wordt vaak op publiek toegankelij-
ke plaatsen aangebracht. Out of the
box, buiten de conventionele pa-
den. Een belangrijk motief hiervoor
is het bereiken van een veel groter
en meer divers publiek. Murals, of-
tewel gevelkunst is nu terug van
nooit echt weggeweest en wordt
gewoon overdag aangebracht.
Cross-over
Een andere naam voor deze meng-
kunst is: Eclecticisme. Het streeft
ernaar verschillende stijlelementen
en uitingen te versmelten tot iets
geheel nieuws. Ogenschijnlijk heb-
ben de verschillende expressies
niets te maken met elkaar maar
vijftig en zestig veel toegepast door
interieurdesigners, mode- en deco-
rontwerpers. De echte kunstscene
verwierp destijds deze vorm en be-
titelde het als een decoratieve stijl
met weinig inhoud.
toch is de nieuw ontstane vorm ui-
terst in balans en harmonieus. Ook
het combineren van bijvoorbeeld
hardrock met klassieke muziek
wordt cross-over genoemd. Hierbij
gaat het er over de tegenstellingen
aanvullend op elkaar te laten zijn.
