Joost van Santen Lichtkunst - Projects with daylight artjoostvansanten2
Project with daylight art in architecture.
In many cases, light art refers to a form of visual art that uses artificial light as a central means. That's how it says in Wikipedia. But there are more forms of light art. This publication describes projects with the sun as a light source. Very little has been published about this form of light art. In my long career I have explored and applied the many possibilities of using day and sunlight art, especially in the more unknown area of working with diffuse light.
Changing images of sun projections follow natural processes. They lead to awareness that the light comes from outer space. This is the core of my work.
My projects with sunlight
Sunlight projections follow the movement of the sun and move slowly in space. These movements are so slow that you do not see the movement itself. When you visit such a project, you see it in one moment. You see parts of the project, a colored glass window or a light sculpture, as a static image. Five minutes later the project looks completely different. The work of art develops over time. To understand the project you have to know that you are only seeing one stage and that it is more than that one image.
My projects with diffused light
When the sun doesn't shine I see an almost infinite number of grays and color nuances. In this beautiful 'Dutch Light' no direct light source can be distinguished. The light, which scatters in all directions, shows limitless color transitions with an astonishing range of mixed colors that I can look at for a long time. In my work I use the expressive power of these many color nuances of diffuse light.
I didn't learn anything at school about that elusive diffuse light. It was always about light with a direct light source that travels in a straight line.
In light modules, small objects, I investigate how diffuse light behaves and what visual experiences it produces. The results of those experiments can be found in my work. As early as 1981, I published an article in Leonardo, an international magazine for art and science, 'Light Modules: Pictorial artworks produced by daylight projected onto a translucent screen'.
Lost projects
Works of visual art in architecture are vulnerable. Sometimes maintenance is not a priority and the work can no longer be saved after 20 years. During renovations and demolition, art is often treated negligently. As a result, a number of my works have disappeared over the years.
It is not a Dutch problem. In 1981 I visited Otto Piene, director of the Institute of Advanced Visual Studies at MIT in Cambridge USA. He gave me a list of light artworks throughout the country, about twenty. I went to visit them but only found two works that worked. The rest did not work or could no longer be found.
This publication
This publication is important to me because an overview has not previously been published in the Netherlands about daylight art.
At the end of 2018 I started creating small artworks no bigger than 30x30cm. This is more or less the result of tidying my atelier. I was about to move to a new workspace and was re-considering every item. Throughout time I collected, amongst other things, many inspirational materials, leftover canvasses and wood. I decided to process these leftovers into something new. This is how the first circular artworks emerged. I called them verbal’s because each artwork was a small verbal statement of found characters. These characters originated from plastic bags, magazines, newspapers and wrappings referring to all kinds of contemporary issues, words with a certain load or iconic statements coming from popular culture.
Next to this I found all kinds of strange but graphically interesting plastic objects on the streets. With many of these objects it was difficult or not possible to determine its origin or function. These objects also turned up in my artworks by the name U.F.O., which means in this particular context: Unidentified Found Object.
The support for the characters (verbal’s) and objects (UFO’s) are scraps of canvas, plastic bags, used t-shirts, shower curtains and much more leftover materials. The supporting frame itself is also made of residual wooden slats. So, the artworks are entirely circular. Actual remains of a day, therefore the entire installation is called ‘Remains Of Today’.
Each artwork goes with a reflective story, a lightweight philosophical contemplation. By this contemplation I migrate it to current affairs, dilemmas and observations at present. Sometimes the approach is light footed and absurdist alternated with critical remarks. The found objects, because of their origin, also have an alternative story, the story of the ‘consumer society’. During the short hikes I made, and still make, I gradually discovered these small indefinable pieces of plastic next to the usual litter like tin cans and plastic bags. By placing these typical pieces of plastic on an artistic pedestal, it reflects our daily apparently trivial but harmful actions.
Due to social media and Internet images are always and everywhere. Its communicating power is Immense. We are continuously affected, manipulated and directed in ways we cannot even imagine. My multi-panelled artwork appeals to that conspicuous feeling. It sends all kinds of signals to the viewer but the viewer is not sure of what kind of message it got. At the same time all these artworks emerged from pure coincidence and only gained secondly it’s meaning based on what was found and collected and a hunch of the artist.
Spin Off projects Remains Of Today.
Audio Experience A series of musical compositions is made by musician and composer A.R.T. (Ali Reza Tahoeni) inspired by the visual art installation ‘Remains Of Today’.
Video Experience As Ali responded to my art initially, I am responding back to his music with my video clip

Kijk, Visies, Illusies, Product
CKV deel 2: Kunst en dromen
De realiteit verdraaid, De realiteit veranderd
CKV deel 3: Toegepast
Haircar
5. Kunst, een venster op de wereld
deel 1
Kijk, zo ziet de wereld er uit
Opdracht cultuurkalender
6. Kunst, een venster op de wereld
In deze module leer je:
Welke functies kunst kan hebben
Wat kunst kan betekenen
hoe kunst de wereld kan beïnvloeden
door middel van:
Cultuurkalender: de kunstwereld volgens….
Visies fotoreeks: New kids en Het journaal
Foto’s: iIlusies in het echt
Productschilderij
7. Kijk, zo ziet de wereld er uit
Veel kunst houdt zich bezig met
het dagelijks leven
Doet daar een uitspraak of
mededeling over
Elke vorm van kunst doet dat op
een eigen manier
Een schilderij ervaar je anders dan
een muziekstuk
Steeds op een andere manier is
de mededeling te ervaren
8. opdracht 1: Cultuurkalender
1. Schilderkunst 7 Fotografie
2. Bouwkunst 8. Film
3. Beeldhouwkunst 9. Grafische vormgeving
4. Muziek 10. Toneel
5. Literatuur 11 Design
6. Cabaret 12 Dansen
11. Beantwoord de vragen op het finaleformulier
over de opdracht cultuurkalender
Activiteit 1
12. Kunst, een venster op de wereld
deel 1
Kunst demonstreert een levensvisie
Opdracht 2:Visies, fotoreeks
13. New kids en Het journaal
anderen in scene is gezet. Gebouwen en straten worden
ontworpen, reclames bedacht, kleding gemaakt en winkels
ingericht.
on the block.
15. Beantwoord de vragen op het finaleformulier
over de opdracht fotoreeks
Activiteit 2
16. Kunst, een venster op de wereld
deel 1
onderscheiden in hoge of lage kwaliteit kunst.
koekoeksklok
functie klopt
materiaal is plastic
(i.p.v hout)
kleur is te fel
Wel leuk en vrolijk!
functie kan niet: ze gaan dan kapot
materiaal is anders: porselein
veel versieringen
28. Opdracht 4: Vormplaat
bewonderen of veroordelen.
- product in andere kleur
29. Beantwoord de vragen op het finaleformulier
over de opdracht kunst en kitsch, Vormplaat
Activiteit 4
30. Kunst en de dromen
deel 2
De realiteit verdraaid
De realiteit veranderd
31. In deze module leer je:
Welke soorten droomwerelden er zijn
Wat dromen kan betekenen
Hoe dromen de wereld kan beïnvloeden
door middel van:
Opdracht 5: The da vinci code
Opdracht 6: The Solipsist
tonen we.
33. Opdracht 5 : the da Vinci code
34. Beantwoord de vragen op het finaleformulier
over de opdracht realiteit verdraaid,
The da Vinci code
Activiteit 5
37. Beantwoord de vragen op het finaleformulier
over de opdracht realiteit veranderd,
Solipsist
Activiteit 6
38. Kunst, toegepast
deel 3
Wat is de gebruikswaarde en toegevoegde waarde
van toegepaste kunst
Hoe beïnvloedt toegepaste kunst je dagelijkse leven
Opdracht 7: Haircar
39. Toegepaste kunst
41. Kunst in toegepaste kunst
belangrijk statussymbool zien. In zijn”verhaal” gaan auto’s
hun eigen leven leiden. De haircars zijn persoonlijkheden.
45. Beantwoord de vragen op het finaleformulier
over de kunst toegepast; Haircar
Activiteit 7
46. Culturele activiteiten
gemaakt, posters gemaakt enz
47. Keulen.
Weer in
Nederland heb je over 1 van deze culturele
hoogtepunten een opdracht gemaakt.
Beantwoord de vragen op het finaleformulier
Culturele Activiteit 1
48.
49. CKV-dag
activiteiten gedaan. Bijv. fotograferen, bezoek aan
architectenburo B&O in de Gasfabriek, Schilderen
met ecoline, bezoek aan het Drukkerijmuseum,
Muziek van de Busquito’s. Het cabaret van Rayen
Panday dat niet door ging!
Beantwoord de vragen op het finaleformulier
Culturele Activiteit 2
50.
51. ZEP
Voorstelling in Ogterop van toneelgroep ZEP;
“McShake-remake”
een moderne bewerking van het Shakespeare-
stuk “The comdey of errors”
Beantwoord de vragen op het finaleformulier
Culturele Activiteit 3
52.
53. Het formulier heeft een fout: 2x ZEP…
Dus door naar 5.
Aboriginal art anders.
Workshop schilderen door kunstenares Christien
de Jong. Schilderen in de stijl van de Australische
oorspronkelijke bewoners: de Aboriginals maar
dan met moderne technieken en andere
symboliek
Beantwoord de vragen op het finaleformulier
Culturele Activiteit 5
54.
55. Er gaat niets boven Groningen
Bezoek aan het stationshal Groningen, Groninger
museum en stad Groningen. Elk groepje heeft een
presentatie gehouden over een deel van de
excursie, een fotoroute gemaakt door
Groningenstad heen en begrippen aangetoond in
schilderijen.
Beantwoord de vragen op het finaleformulier
Culturele Activiteit 6
56.
57. Keuze culturele activiteit
Culturele Activiteit 7
