Part II Read the passage and choose the best answer.
Miss Leary lived for her annual holiday. For fifty weeks of the year, she worked as the assistant librarian at the local
library on an extremely small salary. However, it was enough to keep her, to pay the rent on her small two- roomed flat,
and to buy the meager amount of food and clothes that she needed throughout the year. And she still saved half of her
salary for one thing: her annual holiday, which she always took at the same time every year without fail. Toady was the
last day in the library before her annual holiday. Others would have kept referring to it and would perhaps have
welcomed enquiries from colleagues about it, but not Miss Leary. That was not surprising, since miss Leary never
discussed her private life with anyone. She went about her job with her usual quiet efficiency, and not a sign of
excitement. People knew of course that she went away for the fortnight holiday. After all she had to cancel the milk and
her daily papers. But no one knew where she went. They assumed that she went to a quiet seaside resort or to stay with
relatives in the country. Certainly she stayed in England. She couldn’t afford to go abroad, could she? But there they were
wrong. And if any of her colleagues had seen her while they were on their holidays at Lake Como in Northern Italy, they
would never have recognized her. You see, for Miss Leary, her annual holiday was an annual change when just for a few
days in the year, she adopted a completely different appearance, life style, and character. She bought the clothes she
needed the rest of the year as cheaply as possible, but always managed to save to buy the latest fashions to wear on
holiday. She walked or caught the bus everywhere at home, but traveled first class on holiday. She even had her hair
restyled just before she left for Como. And if she had no real friends in England, she had a number of good friends in
Como, and one or two very special ones. The last borrower left the library. The librarian locked the large doors and held
the small door open for the staff to leave. As Miss Leary stepped out into a warm Saturday evening, the librarian said: “
Have a good holiday, Miss Leary. See you in August”. He smiled, and she allowed herself a light smile. “ Oh yes, of
course. Thank you”. As she walked off in the direction of home, her pace began to quicken slightly as she thought of her
open half- packed suitcase and her passport and first -class air ticket lying there among the clothes.

Miss Leary lived for her annual holiday. For fifty weeks of the year, she worked as the assistant librarian at the local library on an extremely small salary. However, it was enough to keep her, to pay the rent on her small two- roomed flat, and to buy the meager amount of food and clothes that she needed throughout the year. And she still saved half of her salary for one thing: her annual holiday, which she always took at the same time every year without fail. Toady was the last day in the library before her annual holiday. Others would have kept referring to it and would perhaps have welcomed enquiries from colleagues about it, but not Miss Leary. That was not surprising, since miss Leary never discussed her private life with anyone. She went about her job with her usual quiet efficiency, and not a sign of excitement. People knew of course that she went away for the fortnight holiday. After all she had to cancel the milk and her daily papers. But no one knew where she went. They assumed that she went to a quiet seaside resort or to stay with relatives in the country. Certainly she stayed in England. She couldn’t afford to go abroad, could she? But there they were wrong. And if any of her colleagues had seen her while they were on their holidays at Lake Como in Northern Italy, they would never have recognized her. You see, for Miss Leary, her annual holiday was an annual change when just for a few days in the year, she adopted a completely different appearance, life style, and character. She bought the clothes she needed the rest of the year as cheaply as possible, but always managed to save to buy the latest fashions to wear on holiday. She walked or caught the bus everywhere at home, but traveled first class on holiday. She even had her hair restyled just before she left for Como. And if she had no real friends in England, she had a number of good friends in Como, and one or two very special ones. The last borrower left the library. The librarian locked the large doors and held the small door open for the staff to leave. As Miss Leary stepped out into a warm Saturday evening, the librarian said: “ Have a good holiday, Miss Leary. See you in August”. He smiled, and she allowed herself a light smile. “ Oh yes, of course. Thank you”. As she walked off in the direction of home, her pace began to quicken slightly as she thought of her open half- packed suitcase and her passport and first -class air ticket lying there among the clothes. 37.
