practice, item, etc.
Standards are published documentation of
established specifications and procedures.
Standards are the ‘how to’ instructions for all
aspects pertaining to the development, delivery and
use of products and services.

and communicate.
4. PURPOSES OF STANDARDS
Standards serves to:
establish commonality in language, processes and procedures;
define and establish criteria for the production/development,
delivery and use of products and services;
ensure the reliability of the materials, products, methods, and/or
services people use every day;
address a range of issues, including but not limited to various
protocols that help ensure product functionality and compatibility;

9. STANDARDS IN TOURISM
The mechanism through which standards are awarded
and further dictated are called CERTIFICATIONS and
LICENSE. As it is with some industries, occupations and
products, the tourism industry has several
certifications and license (the governing mechanism
for established standards) required for operation,
development, delivery and use of tourism products.
In the tourism industry, there are many standards
that dictates the procedures, requirements and rules
governing the related tourism products and services,
their development , delivery to customers and use.

HAACP - Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points.
A preventative food safety system in which every step in the
manufacture, storage and distribution of a food product is
scientifically analyzed for microbiological, physical and chemical
hazards.
HACCP is a tool to assess hazards and establish
control systems that focus on prevention rather than relying mainly
on end-product testing.

ISO 14001 –
An internationally agreed standard that
sets out the requirements for an
environmental management system. It
helps organizations improve their
environmental performance through
more efficient use of resources and
reduction of waste, gaining a
competitive advantage and the trust of

Hospitality Assured – CTO :
The Hospitality Assured Certification for the Caribbean for which the Caribbean Tourism
Organization (CTO) holds the license, seeks to actively encourage tourism and hospitality
businesses in the region to put in place a service quality framework that meets the
requirements for the European Foundation for Quality Management Excellence Model.
