Joseph Stalin rose to power in the Soviet Union after the October Revolution and Vladimir Lenin's death. As General Secretary and leader of the USSR, he instituted the Great Purge to eliminate political enemies and consolidated his control. At the Yalta Conference in 1945 after World War 2, where the Soviet Union emerged as a superpower, Stalin outlined ambitious five-year plans to develop the Soviet nuclear program, space program, and transform the Soviet economy and environment through massive construction projects.
